Russia warns it will not allow ships with Ukraine grain without consent

Russia's UN ambassador on Monday accused Ukraine of using the Black Sea shipping corridor to get grain to world markets for military and sabotage purposes against its fleet, saying this is why it suspended implementation of the deal and warning that it will not allow the unimpeded passage of vessels without its consent which is currently taking place. Vassily Nebenzia told an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called by Russia that the Black Sea remains an area of hostilities and we cannot allow an unimpeded passage of vessels without our inspection. He said Russia will undertake our own measures to control the ongoing ship movements but gave no details. Nebenzia accused Ukraine, with help from the West, especially the United Kingdom, of carrying out massive aviation and sea strikes on Russia's Black Sea fleet and infrastructure in Sevastopol in the early morning hours of October 29, under the cover of the humanitarian grain corridor which was established under the July 22

Suspension of Black Sea Grain initiative could worsen food security: India

India said the suspension of the Black Sea Grain initiative, an UN-brokered deal that allowed food exports from Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict, is expected to further exacerbate food security, fuel and fertiliser supply challenges faced by the world, particularly the global South. R. Madhu Sudan, Counsellor in India's Permanent Mission to the UN, said the grain initiative, a result of the UN Secretary-General's efforts, had aimed to avert a global food crisis and ensure food security. The initiative resulted in the export of more than nine million tonnes of grains and other food products out of Ukraine. The Black Sea Grain initiative and cooperation by the parties so far had provided a glimmer of hope for peace in Ukraine... The suspension of the Black Sea Grain initiative, we believe is expected to further exacerbate the food security, fuel and fertilizer supply challenges faced by the world, particularly the global South, Madhu Sudan said Monday at the Security Council briefing

Russian strikes hit Ukraine, most of Kyiv without water, power supply

A massive barrage of Russian strikes on Monday morning hit critical infrastructure in Kyiv, Kharkiv and other cities, knocking out water and power supplies in apparent retaliation for what Moscow alleged was a Ukrainian attack on its Black Sea Fleet over the weekend. The mayor of Ukraine's capital said that 80 per cent of consumers in Kyiv were left without water supplies due to the damage to a power facility near the city from Russian military strikes on Monday. Local authorities were working on restoring the supplies as soon as possible, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said, telling Kyiv residents in the meantime to stock up on water from the nearest pump rooms and points of sale. In a separate Telegram post, Klitschko added that water supplies in some areas of Kyiv will be restored in three to four hours, and power had already been restored in one of the city's districts. Loud explosions were heard across the Ukrainian capital in the early morning as residents prepared to go to work. Man

Barrage of Russian strikes on key infrastructure in Ukrainian cities

Ukrainian officials on Monday morning reported a massive barrage of Russian strikes on critical infrastructure in Kyiv, Kharkiv and other cities. Part of the Ukrainian capital was cut off from power and water supplies as a result, its mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Officials also reported possible power outages in the cities of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia resulting from the strikes. The attack comes two days after Russia accused Ukraine of a drone attack against Russia's Black Sea Fleet off the coast of the annexed Crimean peninsula. Ukraine has denied the attack, saying that Russia mishandled its own weapons, but Moscow still announced halting its participation in a UN-brokered deal to allow safe passage of ships carrying grain from Ukraine.

Global food concerns rise as Russia halts UN-brokered Ukraine grain deal

US President Joe Biden has warned that global hunger could increase because of Russia's suspension of a UN-brokered deal to allow safe passage for ships carrying Ukrainian grain. It's really outrageous, said Biden speaking in Wilmington, Delaware, on Saturday. There's no merit to what they're doing. The UN negotiated that deal and that should be the end of it. Biden spoke hours after Russia announced it would immediately halt participation in the agreement, alleging that Ukraine staged a drone attack Saturday against Russia's Black Sea Fleet ships off the coast of occupied Crimea. Ukraine has denied the attack, saying that Russia mishandled its own weapons. The grain initiative has allowed more than 9 million tons of grain in 397 ships to safely leave Ukrainian ports since it was signed in July, and the UN chief on Friday urged Russia and Ukraine to renew the deal when it expires in late November. The grain agreement has succeeded in bringing down global food prices, which have fal

Russia suspends UN-brokered Ukraine grain deal over ship attack claim

Russia announced Saturday that it will immediately suspend its implementation of a U.N.-brokered grain deal that has seen more than 9 million tons of grain exported from Ukraine during the war and has brought down soaring global food prices. The Russian Defense Ministry cited an alleged Ukrainian drone attack Saturday against Russia's Black Sea Fleet ships moored off the coast of occupied Crimea as the reason for the move. Ukraine has denied the attack, saying that the Russians mishandled their own weapons. The Russian declaration came one day after U.N. chief Antonio Guterres urged Russia and Ukraine to renew the grain export deal, which was scheduled to expire on Nov. 19. Guterres also urged other countries, mainly in the West, to expedite the removal of obstacles blocking Russian grain and fertilizer exports. The U.N. chief said the grain deal brokered by the United Nations and Turkey in July helps "to cushion the suffering that this global cost-of-living crisis is inflicting o

Russia says it will suspend UN-brokered Ukraine grain export deal

The Russian Defense Ministry said Saturday that Moscow has moved to suspend its implementation of a UN-brokered grain export deal which has seen more than 9 million tons of grain exported from Ukraine and brought down global food prices. The ministry cited an alleged Ukrainian drone attack against Russia's Black Sea Fleet ships moored off the coast of occupied Crimea, which Russia says took place in early Saturday, as the reason for the move. Ukraine has denied the attack. The Russian declaration came one day after U.N. chief Antonio Guterres urged Russia and Ukraine to renew the deal. Guterres also urged other countries, mainly in the West, to expedite the removal of obstacles blocking Russian grain and fertilizer exports. The U.N. chief underlined the urgency of renewing the deal brokered by the United Nations and Turkey in July, which expires on Nov. 19, to contribute to food security across the world, and to cushion the suffering that this global cost-of-living crisis is ...

Russians moving comrades from Kherson's hospitals, says official

Russian troops moved large numbers of sick and wounded comrades from hospitals in southern Ukraine's Kherson region, Ukrainian military officials reported on Saturday as their forces fought to retake a province overrun by invading soldiers early in the war. Kremlin-installed authorities in the mostly Russian-occupied region previously urged civilians to leave the city of Kherson, the region's capital. The Moscow-appointed authorities in Kherson also were reported this week to have joined tens of thousands of residents who fled to other Russia-held areas ahead of an expected Ukrainian advance. The so-called evacuation of invaders from the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson region, including from medical institutions, continues," the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a morning update. All equipment and medicines are being removed from Kherson hospitals. The military's claims could not be independently verified. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sa
