Europe understands India's position in continuing with procurement of crude oil from Russia and it appreciates New Delhi's overall stand on the Ukraine conflict, Ambassador of European Union Ugo Astuto said on Thursday on the eve of the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of the neighbouring country. With India set to host a crucial meeting of the foreign ministers of G20 states after five days, Astuto also said it is not a "business as usual situation" and the crisis will have an impact on the proceedings of the grouping. At the same time, the envoy asserted that the European Union trusts the Indian presidency of G20 to make the proceedings productive in that respect. In an exclusive interview to PTI, the ambassador of the 27-nation European Union said the Indian voice on the conflict is an influential one and that there is appreciation in Europe of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement that it is not time for war. Ukraine's foreign minister has urged the world's nations as the anniversary of Russia's invasion nears to prove they stand for the United Nations Charter and vote in favour of a UN resolution calling for a peace that ensures his war-ravaged country's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity. Dmytro Kuleba told an emergency special session of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday that despite Moscow's empty calls for negotiations, Russia still wants to destroy Ukraine as a nation. He said the resolution, to be put to a vote Thursday in the 193-member world body, will contribute to our joint efforts to bring the war to an end as well as protect the fundamental principles of international law and the UN Charter. Calling this a decisive moment to show support, unity and solidarity, he recalled standing in the assembly urging its member nations to prevent war days before Russia's February 24, 2022 invasion. Against all odds, he said, Ukraine exercised its right to ...

NATO's chief has said that the military alliance has seen some signs that China may be planning to support Russia in its war in Ukraine, and strongly urged Beijing to desist from what would be a violation of international law. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also told The Associated Press in an interview on Wednesday that the alliance, while not a party to the war, will support Ukraine for as long as it takes. Asked whether NATO has any indication that China might be ready to provide arms or other support to Russia's war, Stoltenberg said: We have seen some signs that they may be planning for that and of course NATO allies, the United States, have been warning against it because this is something that should not happen. China should not support Russia's illegal war. Stoltenberg said potential Chinese assistance would amount to providing (direct) support to a blatant violation of international law, and of course (as) a member of the UN security council China should not in an

A handful of congressional Republicans met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a signal of continued US support even as hard-right members of the party vow to block future aid to the embattled country. The newly appointed chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee led a small delegation to Kyiv on Tuesday to meet with Zelenskyy for the first time since the start of the war a year ago and since Republicans won the majority in the House of Representatives in November. Chairman Mike McCaul and four other Republican lawmakers said they discussed at length what Ukraine's military needs to fight off Russian aggression.
