Railways bets big on long-term contracts to regain its lost marketshare

Indian railways is betting big on the long-term contract plan to regain its lost marketshare in sectors like cement, steel and fertilisers. According to sources close to the development, in cement sector only the national carrier is targeting at least 110 million tonne cargo in financial year 2017-18.Railways is already in touch with companies like UltraTech Cement Ltd and ACC Ltd and also the Cement Manufacturers' Association (CMA). Railway minister Suresh Prabhu had launched a policy for long-term contracts with major freight customers on Thursday. "Our main focus is on sectors like cement, steel, fertilisers, grains, , iron ore, scrap and pig iron. We are already in talks with a few companies. Initially our focus will be on cement and steel sectors and expect to achieve over 110 MT on cement only during the next fiscal," said Mohammed Jamshed, member (traffic), railway board.Railways has already crossed 1000 MT of freight traffic in 2016-17 and expects to achieve its revised ...

Trains to remote areas will soon gain steam

As progress in laying new railway lines in hilly, remoter and hitherto unconnected habitations gets more focus, the central government is mulling a separate scheme or programme for giving impetus to this, on the lines of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).NITI Aayog, say officials, is expected to suggest separating the task of laying rail tracks and connecting remote habitations through the rail network as an entirely different programme, outside the current allocations. This is to give these added focus and to ensure completion of such projects, many languishing for years."We need schemes like NHDP (the highways developmnent programme) and PMGSY in the railways. Even today, some parts of the northeast and Odisha are not connected by rail," a senior government official said. He said the Aayog will be asking the railways for a project report on the lines of PMGSY and NHDP. "We would like to make this a national priority.
