King Charles III won't appear on new Australian bank notes: Central bank

King Charles III won't feature on Australia's new $5 bill, the nation's central bank announced Thursday, signaling a phasing out of the British monarchy from Australian bank notes, although he is still expected to feature on coins. A new Indigenous design will replace the previous portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II, Australia's Reserve Bank said, a move which honors the culture and history of the First Australians. The other side of the $5 banknote will continue to feature the Australian parliament," the bank said in a statement. The $5 bill is Australia's only bank note to feature the monarch. It said the decision followed consultation with the government, which supported the change. Treasurer Jim Chalmers weighed in on the decision, saying the change was an opportunity to strike a good balance. The monarch will still be on the coins, but the $5 note will say more about our history and our heritage and our country, and I see that as a good thing, he told reporters in ...

I look forward to seeing people come together to celebrate and pay tribute to King Charles III by taking part in local and national events across the country in his honor. King Charles coronation to take place on May 6 next year: Buckingham Palace

The coronation of Britain's King Charles III will take place at Westminster Abbey in London on May 6 next year, Buckingham Palace announced on Tuesday. The 73-year-old monarch, who acceded to the throne on the passing of his mother Queen Elizabeth II last month, will be officially bestowed with his crown and royal paraphernalia at the coronation ceremony to be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The palace said the King will be crowned alongside his wife, Queen Consort Camilla. The coronation will reflect the monarch's role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry, the palace said. During the coronation ceremony, the sovereign is anointed, blessed and consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury. After receiving the orb and sceptres, the Archbishop places St Edward's Crown on the Sovereign's head. Traditionally, the coronation is a solemn religious service, together with an occasion for celebration and pageantry. The cerem

King Charles III decides not to attend int'l climate summit in Egypt

King Charles III has decided not to attend the international climate change summit in Egypt next month, fueling speculation that the new monarch will have to rein in his environmental activism now that he has ascended the throne. The Sunday Times newspaper reported that the decision came after Conservative Prime Minister Liz Truss objected to Charles attending the conference, known as COP27, when she met with the king last month at Buckingham Palace. While there was no official rebuttal, other British media quoted unidentified palace and government sources as saying that Charles made his decision after consultation with the prime minister and that any suggestion of disagreement was untrue. Under the rules that govern Britain's constitutional monarchy, the king is barred from interfering in politics. By convention, all official overseas visits by members of the royal family are undertaken in accordance with advice from the government and a decision like this would have resulted from

Constitution restricts King Charles from voicing environmental concerns

On a blustery November day last year Britain's future king stood before world leaders to deliver a rallying cry that they should "act with all despatch, and decisively to confront a common enemy. The clarion call in the vast, windowless hall of a Glasgow convention center at the opening of the U.N. climate conference concerned an issue long dear to the heart of the then-Prince Charles. Climate change and loss of biodiversity were no different from the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the globe, he said. In fact, they pose an even greater existential threat, to the extent that we have to put ourselves on what might be called a war-like footing. He warned leaders that time was running out to reduce emissions, urging them to push through reforms that are radically transforming our current fossil fuel-based economy to one that is genuinely renewable and sustainable. We need a vast military-style campaign to marshal the strength of the global private sector," he said, adding that the trilli

King Charles III pledges additional duty to protect faith diversity in UK

King Charles III has pledged to uphold the additional duty as a new monarch of protecting the diversity of the UK and be a sovereign of all communities around the Commonwealth. Addressing a group of faith leaders on Friday evening in the Bow Room at Buckingham Palace, where just days before his mother Queen Elizabeth II's coffin lay in rest before its final journey to Westminster Hall, the 73-year-old royal said he has always thought of Britain as a community of communities. As a committed Anglican Christian, Charles said he believed in protecting the space for all faiths, building on the foundation laid by his beloved mother. I have always thought of Britain as a community of communities, the King said in an address to around 30 faith leaders invited to the palace. That has led me to understand that the sovereign has an additional duty less formally recognised but to be no less diligently discharged. It is the duty to protect the diversity of our country, including by protecting

Crowds gather in London to see Queen Elizabeth II's coffin procession

Queen Elizabeth II's coffin will leave Buckingham Palace for the last time Wednesday as it is taken amid somber pageantry on a horse-drawn gun carriage past crowds of mourners to the Houses of Parliament, where the late monarch will lie in state for four days. Crowds began massing early along the flag-lined road outside the palace for the procession from the monarch's official London residence to the historic Westminster Hall at Parliament. King Charles III and other members of the royal family will walk behind the coffin. Thousands of people are gathering on The Mall outside Buckingham Palace and along the banks of the River Thames hours before the coffin procession begins. The crowds are the latest manifestation of a nationwide outpouring of grief and respect for the only monarch most Britons have ever known, who died at her beloved Balmoral summer retreat on Thursday at age 96, ending a 70-year reign. It's a very sad day, but it's our last opportunity to do our duty for the quee

King Charles III reaffirms vow to follow mother's 'shining example'

Britain's King Charles III on Tuesday reaffirmed his vow to follow the "shining example" set by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in a speech at Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland during his state mourning tour of all parts of the United Kingdom. The 73-year-old monarch went on a brief walkabout in Hillsborough shortly after landing in Belfast for what is the first visit to the devolved nation by a British King in nearly 80 years. Joined by his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, Charles shook hands and greeted crowds before heading to St. Anne's Cathedral for a service of reflection for the Queen's life. "At the very beginning of her life of service, the Queen made a pledge to dedicate herself to her country and her people and to maintain the principles of constitutional government. This promise she kept with steadfast faith," he said in a speech in response to the customary message of condolence by the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, Alex Maskey. "Now, with that shinin

King Charles in Belfast, Queen Elizabeth II's coffin to return to London

King Charles III flew to Northern Ireland on Tuesday on the latest leg of his tour of the four parts of the United Kingdom, where crowds of well wishers gathered to greet him in a region with a contested British and Irish identity that is deeply divided over the British monarchy. In the latest outpouring of affection since Queen Elizabeth II's death last Thursday, hundreds of people were lining the street leading to Hillsborough Castle, the royal family's official residence in Northern Ireland, just outside Belfast. The area in front of the gates to the castle was carpeted with hundreds of floral tributes. On Monday night, Charles and his siblings, Anne, Andrew and Edward, their heads bowed, briefly stood vigil around their mother's flag-draped coffin in St. Giles' Cathedral as members of the public filed past. Earlier, a man wearing a suit adorned with medals stood silently, bowed his head and moved on. A woman dabbed away tears with a handkerchief. Another woman with two young ...

Darling late mother set example of selfless duty: Britain's King Charles

King Charles III on Monday addressed Parliament for the first time as Britain's monarch during which he pledged to follow the example of selfless duty set by his "darling late mother" Queen Elizabeth II in upholding "the precious principles of constitutional governance. Responding to the condolences offered by the House of Commons and Lords at Westminster Hall in London, the monarch reflected upon the "weight of history" as he pointed to the many symbols of his mother's reign around the historic Westminster Hall within the Houses of Parliament complex and quoted from William Shakespeare to pay tribute to the Queen, who passed away aged 96 in Scotland on Thursday. "While very young her late Majesty pledged herself to serve her country and her people and to maintain the precious principles of constitutional government which lie at the heart of our nation, said Charles. "This vow she kept with unsurpassed devotion. She set an example of selfless duty which with God's help and your ...

UK PM Truss takes oath of loyalty to Britain's new monarch King Charles III

Prime Minister Liz Truss and senior members of her government have taken oaths of loyalty to King Charles III in the House of Commons. House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle was the first to pledge he will bear true allegiance to his Majesty King Charles, his heirs and successors, followed by the longest-serving lawmakers and the prime minister. All lawmakers pledge allegiance to the monarch after they are elected. Making a new vow when the monarch changes is not a legal requirement, but all 650 lawmakers will have a chance to retake the oath in the coming days if they wish. Normal parliamentary business has been suspended during a period of mourning for the queen. The House of Commons is holding a rare Saturday session so that lawmakers can pay tribute to the late monarch.
