Polling for Nagaland Assembly tomorrow; 13 lakh voters, 183 candidates

The stage is set for assembly polls in Nagaland, where over 13 lakh voters will decide the electoral fate of 183 candidates contesting in 59 out of a total of 60 seats on Monday. The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the BJP are contesting the polls on a 40:20 seat-sharing basis. The Congress, which ruled the state till 2003 and does not have any member in the current House, has fielded 23 aspirants. Polling will be held from 7 am to 4 pm, while counting of votes will be taken up on March 2. The Akuluto seat in Zunheboto district was won uncontested by BJP nominee and sitting MLA Kazheto Kinimi. The NDPP had allied with the BJP and formed government in the northeastern state in 2018, with backing from the JD(U) and an Independent. In 2021, the Naga People's Front (NPF) joined the ruling NDPP-led alliance to form an all-party government named United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Polling underway for 46 local bodies across 18 districts in Madhya Pradesh

Polling was underway on Tuesday for 46 local bodies across 18 districts in Madhya Pradesh for which 3,397 candidates are in the fray. Results will be declared on September 30. The polling began at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm. State Election Commission (SEC) secretary Rakesh Singh on Monday said 3,397 candidates are in the fray for the elections to 46 urban bodies, including 17 municipal councils and 29 Nagar Parishads. Twenty five corporators have been elected unopposed in these urban bodies, while elections will be held for 814 posts of corporators, he said. The 46 urban bodies include six newly-constituted Nagar Parishads. A total of 8.42 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise.

Raj Babbar gets two-year jail for assaulting polling officer in 1996

A court here awarded two-year imprisonment to Bollywood actor and Congress leader Raj Babbar in a case involving the assault of a polling officer. Babbar was convicted for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing his duty and three other offences. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 8,500 on him. The polling officer had lodged an FIR against Babbar during an election in May 1996. The complaint was lodged at the Wazirganj police station here. At that time, Babbar was contesting from the Samajwadi Party. Babbar was present in the courtroom when the verdict was announced.

Polling was underway on Tuesday in 102 nagar panchayats in 32 districts of Maharashtra, with the election being held without the reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The nagar panchayat seats in Beed are expected see a contest between supporters of BJP leader Pankaja Munde and her cousin and state minister Dhananjay Munde of the NCP. Similarly, in Sindhudurg, the contest is likely to be between supporters of the Shiv Sena and BJP Union minister Narayan Rane. Polling begins in 144 wards of Kolkata Municipal Corporation

Polling in all the 144 wards of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) began at 7 AM on Sunday with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols amid tight security arrangements. State Election Commission Secretary Nilanjan Sandilya said that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure free and fair elections. Voting is being held at 4,959 polling booths and it will continue till 5 PM, he said.
