Passenger vehicle dispatches to dealers in India rose over two-fold last month on a low base of Covid-19-hit May last year. As per the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), passenger vehicle wholesales rose to 2,51,052 units last month as compared to 88,045 units in May 2021. The two-wheeler sales rose to 12,53,187 units in May as compared to 3,54,824 units in the year-ago period. Similarly, total three-wheeler dispatches stood at 28,542 units last month as against 1,262 units in May 2021. Overall sales of PVs, two-wheelers and three-wheelers rose to 15,32,809 units in May. The same stood at 4,44,131 units in the preceding year. "Sales of two-wheelers and three-wheelers continue to remain sluggish in the month of May 2022, as they are even below of what it was 9 years and 14 years ago, respectively," SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said. The demand for passenger vehicles (PVs) will witness moderate growth over the next few quarters with complete unlocking of the economy and revival of demand, particularly in the rural areas, according to Acuite Ratings & Research. However, it said the volumes may remain partly constrained due to the continuing supply challenges in semiconductors and also the sharp increase in retail fuel prices. The domestic PV sales registered a healthy growth of 14.7 per cent year-on-year in FY22 despite the supply challenges in semiconductors that led to longer waiting periods and production cuts for certain models, Acuite said in a statement. The growth print was also supported by a low base factor, given the protracted lockdown in FY21, it added. "Acuite believes that the demand for PVs will witness a moderate growth over the next few quarters with complete unlocking of the economy and revival of demand, particularly in the rural areas," it said. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) on Tuesday said its total sales increased by 89 per cent to 54,455 units in February. The company's total sales stood at 28,777 units in February 2021. The Mumbai-based auto major's passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market rose by 80 per cent to 27,663 units last month as against 15,391 units in February last year, the auto major said in a statement. Commercial vehicle sales increased to 23,978 units last month as compared with 11,559 units in February 2021. The company said its exports last month stood at 2,814 units as against 1,827 units in the same month last year. "All segments showed robust growth including SUVs at 79 per cent, which registered the highest ever monthly volume. We expect demand to continue to remain strong as the Covid situation eases further. "We continue to closely monitor the semiconductor-related parts supply and take corrective action as appropriate," M&M Automotive Division CEO Veejay Nakra noted.
