Letters: Preserve heritage

With reference to Sahil Makkar's article, "India's temple of democracy needs expansion" (August 9), any proposal to shift Parliament to another building should be deliberated upon carefully, because the present building has witnessed many a historic event and occasion, the memories of which should be preserved for posterity. It was here that freedom fighter Bhagat Singh dropped two bombs in April 1929. It was in the central hall of Parliament that independent India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, delivered his famous "Tryst with destiny" speech. It was on the premises of Parliament that the Constitution of India was enshrined after historic orations by stalwarts.Being home to the Central Legislature, the building reminds us that it had once hosted the erstwhile Chamber of Princes, a conclave of rajas and maharajas who governed one third of what is modern-day India. The erasure of their kingdoms from the map of India is one of the proudest moments of post-Independence India. It

India's temple of democracy needs expansion

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan's proposal for having a new Parliament building has found favourable response from the central government. Mahajan approached the urban development ministry, following the demand for more space for parliamentary committees and other legislative work. Her office feels the current seating capacity of 550 members in Lok Sabha cannot be expanded further and more space would be required in 2026, following the delimitation survey in 2021. It would take at least six years to construct the new complex. Business Standard looks at the facts of the current and iconic Parliament building, which came into existence in 1927.Ready Reckoner| It was designed by two famous architects - Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker - who were responsible for the planning and construction of New Delhi| Foundation stone was laid on February 12, 1921 by H R H The Duke of Connaught | The then Governor-General of India, Lord Irwin performed the opening ceremony on January 18, 1

Simian distraction

The reading room for members of Parliament and journalists in the Parliament House premises, near its hallowed Central Hall, had an unwelcome visitor on Thursday. A monkey sneaked in and sat inside for nearly half an hour amid newspapers and magazines. The reading room staff members were too scared to drive it out and sought the help of the watch and ward department. They were, however, alert that the monkey might sneak into the Central Hall, where senior MPs were busy meeting each other and the door that opens towards the reading room was closed hurriedly. Until recently, the Parliament House had employed a langur and his caretaker to scare away monkeys. The langur was removed from service purportedly under pressure from animal rights activists.
