Nurses demand better pay in biggest strike action in UK service history

Nurses employed in the UK's state-funded National Health Service (NHS), many of them Indian, are joining picket lines up and down the country on Thursday in the biggest strikes in history to demand better pay and working conditions amid a cost-of-living crisis. Up to 100,000 nursing staff are taking part in strikes in England, Northern Ireland and Wales in protest against what they say is years of real-terms pay cuts due to inflation and concerns over patient safety. Transgenders entitled to special quota for 3rd gender: Madras High Court

The Madras High Court has held without "hesitation" that transgenders are entitled to a special reservation for third gender viz., transgender category for admission to post basic (nursing) and post basic diploma in psychiatry nursing courses. The court directed the Secretary, Tamil Nadu Health and Family Welfare department, Director of Medical Education (DME), Chennai, and Secretary (selection committee), DME, to treat the petitioner S Tamilselvi as third gender/ transgender and accordingly place her in a special category i.e. transgender category for admission to the course for the academic year 2022-23 for which the present merit list has been issued by the secretary, selection committee, only for female and male candidates. UK nurses' union to go on strikes as cost of living, energy crisis worsen

Britain's biggest nurses' union asked its 300,000 members Thursday whether they want to go on strike in a dispute over pay, and the UK's electricity system operator warned of potential winter blackouts, in the latest evidence of the UK's worsening energy and cost-of-living squeeze. Singapore faces challenge of finding foreign nurses for aging population

One key challenge for Singapore is to find enough foreign nurses to supplement local ones to care for the elderly as the health care system will require 24,000 of them by 2030, according to media reports. "They (nurses and healthcare staff) number 58,000 now and the Ministry of Health estimates that this will need to grow to 82,000 by 2030," Health Minister Ong Ye Kung told Parliament on Wednesday. Singaporeans and permanent residents make up about 72 per cent of Singapore's pool of registered and 63 per cent enrolled nurses. The rest are from the Philippines, Malaysia, China, India, Myanmar and other countries, according to a report by The Straits Times. Acknowledging the heightened international competition for nurses, Ong added that the ministry is supportive of a suggestion by Nominated MP and breast surgeon Tan Yia Swam of granting permanent residency to good performers. He also pointed out that by 2030, one in four Singaporeans will be aged 65 and above, up from one in six .

High court directs govt to appoint administrator to run MP Nursing Council

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the state government to appoint an administrator to run the MP Nursing Council after observing that information furnished to the HC by the regulatory institution was incorrect. The HC, in a ruling delivered on Tuesday, also said the Registrar of the Nursing Council be kept under suspension forthwith subject to further orders of the court. The order came on a PIL that raised the issue of lack of infrastructure in nursing colleges in the state, particularly those located in tribal areas, the petitioner's counsel said. After taking photographs submitted by the petitioner's lawyer into account, the court observed at certain places just sheds have been shown as nursing colleges. The (state) government is directed to appoint an administrator forthwith to run the MP Nursing Council, subject to further orders of this court," a two-member bench of Chief Justice Ravi Malimath and Justice Vishal Mishra in its order. Haryana has approved nursing policy, applicable from Jan 1: Anil Vij

Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij said that the state government has approved nursing policy and it has come into force from January 1 this year.Presiding over a review meeting with the officials of the Medical Education Department, the minister said under this policy the nursing college must have its own hospital of 100 beds or there should be a hospital recognized by the NABH within a radius of 10 kilometres of the nursing college.Apart from this, there should also be a provision for biometric attendance of students studying in recognized nursing colleges."We have to prepare our medical colleges in such a way that they are capable of admitting serious patients and their treatment can be done in these colleges and for this, availability of modern facilities as well as skilled and efficient workers have to be ensured," he said.Similarly, the policy regarding giving old pension to the employees who were recruited before 2006 in Agroha Medical College was discussed and the officers were .
