Shah will try to trigger communal disturbances during Bihar visit: JD(U)

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U) on Sunday alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will try to "trigger communal disturbances" during his tour of the state later this month. JD(U) national president Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan, however, added that the people of Bihar were vigilant, and Shah will not be able to reap benefits for the BJP. "When Amit Shah ji will be here he will try to trigger communal disturbances in Bihar and across the country. But, the people of Bihar are alert (satark') and they (BJP) will not be able to cash in on communal polarisation, Lalan told reporters here. Shah is scheduled to visit Purnea and Kishanganj, both districts with a high concentration of Muslims, on September 23-24. With the BJP rattled by the sudden snapping of ties by Kumar, fireworks are expected during the tour of the home minister, widely regarded as his party's principal strategist. Lalan asserted that the BJP will be decimated and the Mahagathbandhan' comprising JD(U), RJD

JD(U) alleges undeclared emergency in country, Nitish calls for Oppn unity

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Saturday called for Opposition unity to take on the BJP, saying parties need to bury their differences for the welfare of people looking for an "alternative". In his address to the Janata Dal (United) national executive, Kumar claimed his only goal is to work for uniting opposition parties, sources said. The party later authorised him to work for the opposition unity. The meeting also passed a resolution which alleged there is an "undeclared emergency" in the country under the BJP government which is "trying to silence" opposition voices by "misusing" probe agencies. The BJP government at the Centre is labelling the democratic right of dissent as "treason", it alleged. The resolution said the country is looking for an alternative to the BJP and asked all opposition parties to sink their differences and unite. It also accused the BJP of stoking "communal frenzy" in the country. "Minorities are being targeted. Intolerance and extremism have increas

'Is it constitutional?', asks Bihar CM Nitish on JD(U)'s Manipur setback

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday expressed outrage over MLAs of his JD(U) in Manipur jumping ship to join the BJP. Talking to reporters at the party office here, where a two-day national conclave is underway, Kumar questioned the propriety and constitutionality of the alleged poaching by his former ally. He said the party's Manipur MLAs had confirmed their presence at the meeting, and had earlier backed JD(U)'s decision to quit the NDA. "When we were in NDA, they (BJP) gave our MLAs nothing. Now they have been won over," said Kumar, in what appeared to be a reference to horse trading. "Is it proper? Is it constitutional? Is it in line with established norms? They are doing so everywhere. Hence all parties must unite in 2024 for a positive mandate," said the JD(U) leader who is being pitched for a "national" role by his party. Asked about reports that he will be visiting Delhi in the next few days to meet top leaders and explore the prospects of opposition unity, Kumar

No one takes him seriously: Bihar CM on Sushil Modi's 'comedy show' quip

A day after BJP's Sushil Kumar Modi dubbed the meeting of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Telangana counterpart K Chandrashekar Rao as the "latest comedy show of opposition unity", the JD(U) supremo on Thursday claimed that no one takes the saffron party leader seriously and what he said did not matter. Kumar, talking to reporters, also said that the BJP leader's constant criticism of the new Bihar government and him might find him favour with the saffron party's top brass "Who takes him (Modi) seriously...even his party does not. Let him say whatever he wants to say. Since he is saying something against me almost every day, he may find a place for himself at the Centre," said the CM. Modi had on Wednesday termed the meeting of both the CMs in Patna as a "get-together of two daydreamers" and the "latest comedy show of opposition unity". He also quipped that it is a meeting of two leaders who are losing their base in their respective states and harbouring the desire to bec

In Bihar, KCR meets Nitish, Lalu, Tejashwi, calls for 'BJP mukt Bharat'

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Wednesday undertook a whirlwind tour of the Bihar capital where he met top political leaders in the state and also gave a call for BJP mukt Bharat. At a press conference that he addressed with his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar and Deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav by his side, the Telangana chief minister, who is popularly known as KCR, invoked the memory of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan's Kranti (revolution) against tanashahi (dictatorship) to stress the need for a united opposition to take on the BJP's hegemony. KCR, who also met RJD's ailing president Lalu Prasad later in the day, evaded a direct reply on questions about what role he saw in the fight against the BJP for the Congress, the main opposition party nationally with which his Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) is also known to have been at loggerheads. The TRS chief, however, added that his endeavour was to build an alternative that was not a third front, but a main front to figh

With Nitish by his side, Telangana CM in Patna calls for 'BJP mukt Bharat'

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who met his counterpart in Bihar Nitish Kumar, as part of efforts to forge opposition unity, on Wednesday called for a BJP mukt Bharat, blaming the saffron party's government at the Centre for the many ills plaguing the country. At a press conference he addressed in the presence of Kumar, whom he fondly called "bade bhai" (big brother), Rao skirted questions about who will lead a united opposition and whether the Congress will be taken on board. Rao is one of the most vocal satraps opposed to the BJP. These things will be decided in due course. We are in no hurry, said Rao, in reply to questions about the prime ministerial candidate and the role of the Congress, to which his Telangana Rashtra Samiti is bitterly opposed. He blamed the Narendra Modi government for capital drain, a term he coined rhyming 'brain drain' to underscore that businesses were withdrawing their money from the country because of the Centre's policies. Bihar CM Nitish shares stage with Telangana CM, lashes out at Modi govt

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Wednesday lashed out at the Narendra Modi government in the Centre and criticised its excessive prachaar-prasaar (publicity) besides its alleged lack of sensitivity towards the needs of the states. Addressing a function here alongside K Chandrasekhar Rao, his Telangana counterpart, Kumar took a veiled dig at BJP which has undertaken an aggressive campaign to expand its base in the southern state. Your adversaries speak a lot against you. Little do they realize what stuff you are made of. You were the one whose single-minded struggle led to the creation of Telangana. The people will never desert you, Kumar, the de facto leader of the JD(U), said. His teaming with 'KCR', as Rao is popularly called, is being seen as an important step in the direction of achieving opposition unity. Kumar's speech was preceded by KCR giving cheques of Rs 10 lakh each to five soldiers from the state who were killed in the stand-off with Chinese troops in Galwan valley o

Get-together of two daydreamers: Sushil Modi on Nitish Kumar-KCR meet

BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi took a dig at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Telangana counterpart K Chandrashekar Rao, saying their meeting scheduled for Wednesday is a "get-together of two daydreamers". Telangana Chief Minister Rao, popularly known as 'KCR', is scheduled to arrive in Patna on Wednesday and meet Kumar as both leaders aspire to build a united front against the BJP's hegemony. KCR will also be paying cheques of compensation to family members of soldiers who were killed in the stand-off with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh. Taking a swipe at the meeting, Modi said it is a meeting of two leaders who are losing their base in their respective states and "desiring to become prime minister of the country". "It is a meeting of two daydreamers who have no standing in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," the BJP leader told reporters. He dubbed the meeting as the "latest comedy show of opposition unity." Earlier this month, Nitish Kumar aga

Sushil Modi demands Surendra Prasad Yadav's removal from Nitish's cabinet

Senior BJP leader, Sushil Kumar Modi, on Sunday demanded the removal of Bihar Co-operative minister, Surendra Prasad Yadav, from the Nitish Kumar Cabinet for his alleged involvement in criminal cases. Modi, a former deputy chief minister of Bihar, had recently demanded the resignation of state Agriculture minister Sudhakar Singh for his alleged involvement in the rice scam. Talking to media persons here on Sunday, Modi, said, Yadav, an accused in a case registered on June 15, 2018, under the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, must be dismissed from the Nitish Kumar cabinet. Yadav, an RJD MLA, was recently charge-sheeted by a Pocso court for revealing the identity of a gang rape victim, he alleged. A person like Yadav, who is anti-woman, does not deserve to be a minister at all, said the BJP Rajya Sabha member.
