Heavy rains in Mumbai; IMD issues 'orange alert' for three regions

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and neighbouring areas on Tuesday morning and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more showers in the city. The IMD has also issued an 'orange alert' for Raigad, Ratnagiri and Satara, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in the three districts. The MeT department's Santacruz observatory in Mumbai, representative of suburbs, recorded 93.4 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period till 8.30 am on Tuesday, marking another spell of heavy downpour here in the current monsoon season. The Colaba observatory, representative of the island city, recorded 59.2 mm rainfall during the same period, an IMD official said. The IMD has predicted moderate showers in Mumbai on Tuesday and high intensity rains in neighbouring Raigad. Mumbai records 128 new covid-19 cases, 1 death; active tally at 1,666

Mumbai on Monday recorded 128 new cases of coronavirus that took the overall tally to 11,48,106, while one more patient succumbed to the infection in the city, said a civic official. With one more COVID-19-linked death registered in the metropolis, the toll increased to 19,719, said the official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The count of recoveries rose to 11,26,721 after 172 people recuperated from the infection, he said. The city has a coronavirus recovery rate of 98.1 per cent and is now left with 1,666 active cases, the official said. As per a bulletin issued by the civic body, 6,206 swab samples were examined in the last 24 hours for detection of COVID-19, taking the number of tests conducted so far to 1,81,81,541. Of the 128 new cases, only 11 patients were symptomatic, it stated. The growth rate of COVID-19 cases in the city stood at 0.022 per cent between September 5 and September 11, while the case doubling rate has improved to 3,203 days.

Truck catches fire on Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway in Maha's Palghar district

A truck coming to Mumbai from Ahmedabad was gutted in a fire on Sunday evening in the Palghar district neighbouring Mumbai, an incident which affected the traffic on the national highway for at least two hours, police said. No casualties were reported in the incident which occurred near Haloli village under the limits of the Manor police station, about 92 km away from Mumbai. A police official said the truck was operated on CNG and fully loaded when the incident occurred. The exact cause of the fire was not known.

Mumbai records 187 new Covid-19 cases, 1 death, 375 recoveries in a day

Mumbai on Sunday recorded 187 COVID-19 cases and one death, which took the tally in the metropolis to 11,47,978 and the toll to 19,718, a civic official said. The recovery count increased by 375 to touch 11,26,549, leaving the city with 1,711 active cases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official said. Of the new cases, only 13 are symptomatic, taking the total number of such patients to 216, he added. BMC data showed the recovery rate was 98.1 per cent and the growth rate of cases between September 4 and September 10 stood at 0.024 per cent. The overall number of coronavirus tests carried out in the city was 1,81,75,335, including 4,801 in the last 24 hours, as per official data. The caseload doubling time was 2,962 days, it added.

Workers of rival Sena factions clash in Mumbai; FIRs against both sides

Workers of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's camp clashed with each other here in the early hours of Sunday, officials said. After complaints from the two groups, Mumbai Police registered First Information Reports (FIRs) against 10 to 20 members of both the sides, including local MLA Sada Sarvankar, they said. The Dadar police also arrested five Sena workers who were later released on bail, they said. The incident took place around 12.30 am in New Prabhadevi area in which Sena functionary Santosh Talavane was allegedly attacked by Mahesh Sawant and 30 others, police said. 193,000 idols immersed in Mumbai during ten-day Ganesh festival

More than 1.93 lakh idols were immersed in Mumbai during the ten-day Ganesh festival which concluded on Friday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. A total of 1,93,062 idols, including 6,795 idols of Goddess Gauri, were immersed this year in the city, the civic body said. This was 17 per cent increase over 2021 when 1,65,040 Ganesh and Gauri idols had been immersed amid the coronavirus pandemic, the BMC said. Gauri idols usually form a very small proportion of the number. As many as 66,127 idols were immersed in artificial ponds set up across the city over the last ten days. Notably, the number dropped by 20 per cent as last year 82,061 idols had been immersed in artificial ponds. After a gap of two years, Ganpati or Ganesh festival was celebrated without any pandemic-related restrictions this year. According to the BMC, the highest 60,557 idols were immersed on the second day of the festival.

At least 19 dead in Maharashtra during immersion of Lord Ganesh idols

At least 20 persons died, 14 of them due to drowning, in various incidents that occurred during the immersion of Ganesh idols in parts of Maharashtra, police said on Saturday. The 10-day Ganesh festival, which had started on August 31, ended on Friday. In Wardha district three persons drowned at Sawangi, while another one drowned at Devli, an official said. Two persons drowned in a pond in Yavatmal district when they went for immersion of idols, he said. In Ahmednagar district, two persons died of drowning in separate incidents at Supa and Belvandi, he said, adding that two others died in Jalgaon district of north Maharashtra. Devotees bid adieu to Lord Ganesh, over 2,100 idols immersed in Mumbai

A total of 2,160 idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Gauri were immersed till Friday afternoon in various water bodies across Mumbai as the 10-day Ganpati festival, held this year without COVID-19 related restrictions after a gap of two years, drew to a close. No untoward incident was reported during the immersion processions in the metropolis so far, civic officials said. The festival dedicated to the elephant-headed god had begun on August 31. Mumbai sees 290 new Covid cases, two deaths; active tally at 2,236

Mumbai on Thursday reported 290 COVID-19 cases and two deaths, which took the tally to 11,47,331 and the toll to 19,716, a civic official said. This was a dip from the 316 cases and three deaths witnessed on Wednesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official added. Mumbai has been reporting over 200 cases since the beginning of September, he pointed out. Of the 290 new cases, only 19 are symptomatic. The recovery count increased by 270 during the day and touched 11,25,379, leaving the city with 2,236 active cases, the official said. So far, 1,81,51,897 coronavirus tests have been conducted in the city, including 8,914 in the last 24 hours. This was higher than the 8,075 tests conducted in the previous 24-hour period. As per BMC data, the recovery rate was 98.1 per cent, while the overall growth rate of cases between September 2 and 7 stood at 0.028 per cent. The caseload doubling time was 2,471 days, as per official data.

Mumbai logs 316 new Covid cases, three deaths; active count 2,218

Mumbai on Wednesday reported 316 new coronavirus positive cases and three fresh fatalities, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. With this, the infection tally grew to 11,47,041, while the death toll increased to 19,714, it said in a bulletin. On Tuesday, the country's financial capital had recorded 285 COVID-19 cases and zero fatality. The city has been reporting more than 200 cases daily since the beginning of September. The active case count went below the 2,500-mark with 2,218 such cases. A day ago, there were 2,540 active cases. The new cases were detected through 8,075 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, due to which the cumulative test count surged to 1,81,42,983. On Tuesday, 5,046 tests were conducted in the city. Mumbai: Kamaal R Khan 'KRK' gets bail in controversial tweets case

A court here on Wednesday granted bail to actor Kamaal R Khan, popularly known as KRK, in the 2020 case of controversial tweets about actor Akshay Kumar and filmmaker Ram Gopal Verma. On Tuesday, another court here had granted bail to him in a molestation case of 2021. Khan, currently in judicial custody, was arrested by the police from the Mumbai airport last week in connection with his tweets. He is likely to walk out of jail on Thursday morning. Police have claimed that Khan's posts were communal and he targeted Bollywood personalities. However, Khan in his bail plea moved through advocates Ashok Sarogi and Jay Yadav, said that the tweets in question were only his comments on the film titled "Laxmii Bomb" (released as only "Laxmii") and no offence as alleged by the police was committed. Khan is acting as a "critic and/or reporter in the film Industry", the bail plea said. The FIR against him was registered in 2020 under various Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections, including 153 .

48,787 Lord Ganesh idols immersed in Mumbai in two days: Civic official

As many as 48,787 idols of Lord Ganesh were immersed in the sea, ponds and artificial lakes in Mumbai on the sixth and seventh days of the festival, a civic official said on Tuesday. A total of 48,029 idols were immersed on the sixth day on Monday and 758 on the seventh day on Tuesday till 6 PM, the official said. Of the 758 idols, 716 were of household Ganapati, 20 of Sarvajanik (public) Ganapati and 22 were of goddess Gauri. According to the official, of the 236 idols immersed in artificial lakes, 222 were of household Ganapati, six of Sarvajanik Ganpati and eight of goddess Gauri. Mumbai on Tuesday reported 285 new coronavirus cases, but no fresh death linked to the infection for the first time since August 22, while 516 more patients recovered in the metropolis, said the local civic body.
