Poshan Tracker shows over 1,400,000 children severely malnourished: WCD

There are over 14 lakh severely malnourished children in the country as per the government's Poshan Tracker, the Women and Child Development Ministry said on Wednesday. Children who are severely malnourished have very low weight for their height, and are nine times more likely to die in case of diseases due to their weakened immune system. Responding to a question in Rajya Sabha, Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani said under Poshan Tracker, the ICT application for monitoring service delivery under Mission Poshan 2.0, out of approximately 5.6 crore children measured in the month of February 2023, the percentage of severely malnourished children is 2.6 per cent. The number comes to be 14,56,000. The percentage of malnourished children was found to be 7.7 per cent which comes to around 43 lakh, the ministry said.

Smriti Irani seeks people's support to help Amethi's malnourished children

Union minister Smriti Irani on Saturday said there are 1,736 malnourished children in Amethi, and urged the society to come forward and work in a united manner to help them. The Amethi MP inaugurated and laid foundation stones of various developmental projects worth Rs 170 crore here. The Union minister for women and child development said the government is building stadiums, medical colleges, hospitals and undertaking various development projects in Amethi. But there are 1,736 malnourished children here and to help them, awareness is needed in the society. People have to come forward and all of us have to make an effort, Irani said. The minister, who is on a two-day tour of Amethi and Rae Bareli, also inaugurated an 'Amrit Sarovar' (pond) and distributed laptops to children who had lost their parents to Covid. India has largest number of malnourished kids in world: Report

India is home to the largest number of malnourished children in the world, a report said today, advocating that the country needs to frame policies with a focus on reducing health and social inequities."Over the decade (2005-15), there has been an overall reduction in the infant mortality rate and under-five mortality rate in India, yet the country is housing about 50 per cent of undernourished children of the world," said the joint study by Assocham and EY.The report found that towards the end of 2015, 40 per cent of the Indian children were undernourished.On the other hand, it pointed out that urban India is faced with the challenge of over nutrition.India is ranked as the third most obese nation in the world after the US and China and also the diabetes capital of the world, with about 69.2 million people living with it as per the 2015 data by World Health Organisation, said the report."About 37 per cent of our under-five children are underweight, 39 per cent are stunted (low ...
