Maha govt warns of Covid spike citing evasive XBB variant, festive season

On the back of a 17.7 per cent rise in coronavirus cases in Maharashtra this week when compared to last week, the state health department on Monday cited the XBB variant, found for the first time in the country, as well as winters and the festive season as factors that could fuel further spikes. A health official department bulletin said the XBB variant reported in the state had "growth advantage over BA.2.75 and immune evasive property". The BA.2.3.20 and BQ.1 variants have also been detected in the state, a first for the country, it added. It said new COVID-19 cases rose by 17.17 per cent in the October 10-16 period when compared to last week between October 3 and 9, with the rise being noticed particularly in densely-populated Thane, Raigad and Mumbai. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray on Monday thanked Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for the BJP's decision to withdraw its candidate from the bypoll to Andheri East Assembly seat in Mumbai. In a letter written to Fadnavis, Thackeray referred to the senior BJP leader as his dear friend and said it is essential to have a positive political culture. Thane commissioner appeals to people to vote in Citizen Perception Survey

Thane Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar has appealed to residents of the city to vote in the Citizen Perception Survey-2022 which begins from November 1. Bhangar made the appeal on Saturday while reviewing the Smart City Scheme with senior officials of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). The votes can be registered online, a TMC release said. The Citizen Perception Survey is a part of the central government initiative to create a guide system by increasing the participation of citizens while deciding the city planning policy in the Smart City scheme. Under this scheme, collection of various forms of information related to the city starts from different departments. The central government is evaluating the information and the best performing city will get a prize, the release said.

Maharashtra: Thane logs 64 new Covid-19 cases; active tally reaches 507

Maharashtra's Thane district has reported 64 new COVID-19 cases, raising its infection count to 7,45,995, a health official said on Monday. With the addition of the latest numbers on Sunday, the active COVID-19 cases tally in the district, which is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, has gone up to 507 as compared to 488 the previous day, he said. No fatality was reported in the district on Sunday and the death toll remained unchanged at 11,962, he said. The recovery count stood at 7,34,190, the official said.

Maharashtra sees 440 new Covid-19 cases, one death; active tally at 2,820

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 440 COVID-19 cases and one death, which took the tally to 81,27,699 and and toll to 1,48,372, a health department official said. The lone death was in Akola, while Mumbai circle accounted for 275 of the new cases, followed by Pune 64, Nagpur 34, Nashik 31, Aurangabad 18, Kolhapur nine, Latur five and Akola four, he said. The recovery count increased by 437 to reach 79,76,507, leaving the state with an active caseload of 2,820, he said. As per state health department data, the recovery rate stands at 98.14 per cent, while the overall number of coronavirus tests conducted was 8,50,71,981, including 15,835 in the last 24 hours. Major fire rages in godown complex in Thane, no report of injuries as yet

A fire which the civic authorities termed as major broke out at Khan Compound godowns in Thane city's Shil Phata area on Sunday evening. There are no reports of injuries as of now in the major blaze that started at 7pm, regional disaster management cell chief Avinash Sawant said. Firefighting operations are underway, Sawant added.

Mumbai sees 167 new Covid-19 cases, no death; active tally at 1,138

Mumbai on Sunday added 167 COVID-19 cases, which took the tally to 11,52,480, while the death toll remained unchanged at 19,738, a civic official said. Of the new cases, only 14 are symptomatic, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official added. The recovery count rose by 172 to touch 11,31,604, leaving the metropolis with an active caseload of 1,138, he said. BMC data showed the recovery rate was 98.2 per cent and the overall growth rate of cases between October 9 and 15 stood at 0.014 per cent. So far, 1,83,94,263 coronavirus tests have been conducted in Mumbai, including 4,450 in the last 24 hours. The caseload doubling time stands at 4,948 days, as per official data.

Andheri East bypoll: Let Rutuja Latke be elected unopposed, says Pawar

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday sought the unopposed election of Rutuja Latke, the candidate of the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena, in the Andheri East Assembly bypoll scheduled for November 3. Maharashtra on Saturday reported 462 COVID-19 cases, which took the state's tally to 81,27,259, while the death toll stood unchanged at 1,48,371, a health department official said. A day earlier, the state had seen 477 cases and four deaths, he pointed out. Mumbai circle accounted for 288 of the new cases, followed by Pune (89), Nagpur (25), Akola(17), Aurangabad (16), Nashik (11), Latur (10) and Kolhapur (6) circles. The recovery count increased by 403 in the last 24 hours to touch 79,76,070, leaving the state with 2,818 active cases, he said. CBI opposes ex-Maha minister Anil Deshmukh's bail plea in corruption case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday filed its reply opposing the bail plea of former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh in a corruption case registered against him. The 71-year-old NCP leader was arrested in November last year in a money laundering case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and is currently lodged in Arthur Road Jail. The Bombay High Court had last week granted bail to the former minister in the money laundering case, following which he approached the special CBI court for bail in the corruption case. The former minister, in his plea, claimed that former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh and dismissed cop Sachin Waze had acted "in cahoots and passed the buck to him to save their skin. Fire erupts in office of ball bearing company in Thane, no injuries yet

An office of a ball bearing manufacturing company in Thane city of Maharashtra was destroyed in a fire that broke out there in the wee hours of Friday, a civic official said. The incident occurred around 2 am in the company located on Pokhran Road number-2, he said, adding that nobody was injured. "The blaze erupted in the company office, a ground plus one-storey structure. Its upper portion caught fire, in which the furniture, documents and other things got destroyed," said Avinash Sawant, chief of the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). Soon after being alerted, a team of local fire brigade and RDMC personnel rushed to the spot. It took them 3.30 hours to extinguish the flames, he said, adding that the cooling operation was underway. The cause of the fire is being probed, Sawant said.

The Maharashtra government will come out with a policy on the data centre business in a month's time, a senior official said on Thursday. The official said the state already has a comprehensive policy governing the information technology sector under which data centres currently operate, but given the very high growth in data centres and the policy lagging behind the industry, a need was felt to have a separate policy exclusively for the data centres business. When asked about the timeline for the launch of such a policy, the official said the industries department under Uday Samant is taking the lead in the formulation of the policy and added that the document will come out in 30 days. Maharashtra on Thursday recorded 475 fresh coronavirus cases, while one more patient succumbed to the infection in the state, the health department said. With these additions, the state's overall COVID-19 tally rose to 81,26,320, while the death toll increased to 1,48,367, the department said in a bulletin. On Wednesday, the state had recorded 476 cases and four fatalities linked to the respiratory illness. Mumbai recorded 179 cases and the lone coronavirus-linked death reported in the state in the last 24 hours, said the bulletin. The state's case fatality rate was 1.82 per cent, while the recovery rate stood at 98.14 per cent. The health department said 324 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking their cumulative count to 79,75,348 and leaving the state with 2,605 active cases. It said 19,922 coronavirus tests were conducted in the state in the last 24 hours, taking their overall number to 8,50,13,972.
