2 killed as SUV crashes into tree on Eastern Express Highway in Mumbai

At least two persons were killed and five others seriously injured after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) rammed into a tree along the Eastern Express Highway in suburban Vikhroli in the wee hours of Thursday, police said. The accident took place around 12.30 am near Kanjurmarg bus stop, an official said. "A speeding SUV rammed into a road-side peepal tree, in which two persons - its driver and passenger - were killed, while five others sustained serious injuries," he said. After being alerted, police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to a civic-run hospital, he said, adding that the process to register a first information report (FIR) was on.

Maharashtra govt transfers 20 IAS officers including education commissioner

Maharashtra records 476 new Covid-19 cases, 4 deaths; active tally at 2,455

Maharashtra on Wednesday recorded 476 new coronavirus cases and four fresh deaths linked to the infection, while 404 more patients recovered in the state, the health department said. With these fresh additions, the state's overall COVID-19 tally rose to 81,25,845, while the death toll increased to 1,48,366, said the health department in a bulletin. The state had recorded 384 cases and four fatalities due to the respiratory illness on Tuesday. Mumbai recorded 194 cases and one fatality, said the bulletin. Cities of Solapur, Nagpur and Akola recorded one coronavirus-linked death each, it said. The state's case fatality rate stood at 1.82 per cent, while the coronavirus recovery rate was 98.14 per cent. 31 lose money after investing in crypto cloud mining app in Maharashtra

Thirty one people from Solapur city in Maharashtra have allegedly been cheated of Rs 45 lakh after they made investments through a crypto cloud mining app, police said citing complaints. Cloud mining is a mechanism to mine a cryptocurrency, such as bitcoin, using rented cloud computing power and without having to install and directly run the hardware and related software. "The investors were asked to download the CCH Cloud Miner App and the crypto trading app. They were asked to convert their Indian currency into dollars using the crypto trading app and were made to invest in the CCH Cloud Miner App," a police official said on Tuesday. So far, 31 people have approached the police with complaints of cheating, he said, adding that some of the investors received returns initially. 1 killed, 3 injured in high-pressure gas leak at Navi Mumbai power plant

A chief boiler supervisor was killed and three others injured on Sunday after gas leaked from a high-pressure booster pump at the gas turbine power station of the Maharashtra Power Generation Company at Uran in Navi Mumbai, officials said. Police had earlier said an explosion in the boiler pump of the unit, located 48 km from Mumbai, led to the casualties. A statement from the Maharashtra Power Generation Company (Mahagenco) said at about 1230 hrs, there was a gas leak from a high-pressure booster pump, while a 120 MW unit located nearby was operational at Uran. Police said the leak was akin to an explosion, which led to the casualties. A team of Vivek Dhumale, the deceased supervisor, boiler technician K K Patil and Vishnu Patil, a helper who is a contractual employee, was carrying out a routine inspection when the accident occurred, Mahagenco said. Maharashtra on Saturday recorded 480 COVID-19 cases and two deaths, which took the tally to 81,24,299 and the toll to 1,48,357, a health official said. Truck laden with hydrogen cylinders overturns, catches fire in Nashik

A truck laden with hydrogen cylinders overturned and caught fire on Manmad-Malegaon road in Maharashtra's Nashik district on Saturday, police said. There were no casualties in the accident that took place near Manmad in the afternoon, an official said. One of the front tyres of the truck, which was carrying 200 hydrogen gas cylinders, burst near Kandagaon Phata. The driver lost control of the wheel and the vehicle turned turtle, he said. The cylinders in the truck caught fire and started exploding one after another. The vehicle was completely gutted, the official said. There was panic in the area as the cylinders started exploding. Teams from the police, fire brigade and other agencies reached the spot, but couldn't go near the vehicle because of the blasts, he said. The police stopped vehicular traffic on the road up to 2 km, the official said, adding that the blaze was doused after three to four hours.
