Covid-19 centre contracts probe: BMC chief at ED office to record statement

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on Monday went to the Enforcement Directorate's office here in connection with its probe into the alleged irregularities in award of contracts for COVID-19 care centres. The ED had summoned Chahal to record his statement in the matter. Chahal was seen entering the ED's office at Ballard Estate in south Mumbai at around 11.40 am. Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya had alleged irregularities in the COVID-19 centers set up by the BMC. He had also filed a complaint at the Azad Maidan police station, based on which the police registered an FIR against a hospital management firm and some persons for allegedly submitting fake documents to obtain contracts of COVID-19 care centres.

Maharashtra Excise Minister Shambhuraj Desai on Wednesday asked officials in transport and police departments to take innovative and practical steps to improve road safety and advised parents to ensure their young children are well aware of traffic rules before giving them vehicles to drive. Highlighting some recent road accidents involving state politicians, Desai said drivers alone cannot be blamed for such tragedies as politicians make them drive for long hours, especially during the night time. The minister was speaking after inaugurating the 34th "Road Safety Drive 2023" at a function at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in South Mumbai. The event coincided with the National Road Safety Week, which is celebrated from January 11 to 17. Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link will open for traffic in November: CM Shinde

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday said that as much as 90 per cent civil work of the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) is complete, and the bridge will be open for traffic in November this year. This "longest sea bridge in the country" will be the first to have Open Road Tolling (ORT) system, an official release quoted him as saying. Once the bridge opens for traffic, it will be possible to travel from Sewri in central Mumbai to Chirle in Navi Mumbai in 15-20 minutes, Shinde said. Vehicles won't have to stop on the bridge for paying toll thanks to the Open Tolling System, he said. This system is currently used in Singapore, officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said. A court in Maharashtra's Bhiwandi town has adjourned the hearing in a defamation case filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to February 4. The matter came up for hearing on Saturday before Judicial Magistrate First Class L C Wadikar. After hearing the counsels of Gandhi and complainant Rajesh Kunte, who is a local activist of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the magistrate put up the case for hearing on February 4. In 2014, Kunte had filed the case against Gandhi after watching his speech in Thane's Bhiwandi township, where the Congress leader alleged that the RSS was behind the killing of Mahatma Gandhi. S Korean firm Mirae acquires industrial, warehousing asset in Maharashtra

South Korea's Mirae Asset Global Investments Co Ltd has acquired an industrial and warehousing asset at Bhiwandi in Maharashtra for Rs 130 crore. Anarock, one of the leading real estate consultants in the country, facilitated this deal. Mirae Asset Global Investments has done an outright acquisition of a pre-leased Grade A industrial asset at Bhiwandi, Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) for Rs 130 crore, Anarock said in a statement. The industrial property, housed in a 160-acre integrated industrial park and spread over 9 acres, has been acquired from Prakhhyat Infraprojects. Maharashtra reports 16 new Covid cases, zero death; active tally at 140

Maharashtra on Wednesday logged 16 new COVID-19 cases, taking the overall tally to 81,36,725, while no fresh death linked to the infection was registered in the state, said the health department. The coronavirus death toll remained unchanged at 1,48,417. On Tuesday, Maharashtra had reported 22 COVID-19 cases and zero fatality. The Pune administrative circle logged the highest cases at seven, followed by five in Mumbai, two in Akola, one each in Nashik and Nagpur circles, said the department in a bulletin. An administrative circle consists of multiple districts and Maharashtra has eight such circles. As many as 12 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, taking their cumulative count to 79,88,168 and leaving the state with 140 active COVID-19 cases, said the bulletin. Unions of three state-owned power companies in Maharashtra have warned of a 72-hour strike from Wednesday to protest against privatisation of power companies, an official said on Tuesday. The strike has been called by Maharashtra Rajya Karmachari, Adhikari and Abhiyanta Sangharsh Samiti, an action committee of power company unions. "More than 30 unions of drivers, wiremen, engineers and other employees have come together to thwart the attempt of privatisation in the state-owned power companies," Krushan Bhoir, general secretary of Maharashtra State Electricity Workers' Federation told PTI. Maharashtra on Monday recorded eight fresh coronavirus cases, while no new death linked to the infection was registered in the state, the health department said. With this, the state's overall COVID-19 tally rose to 81,36,687, while the death toll remained unchanged at 1,48,417, the department said in a bulletin. On Sunday, the state had recorded 16 cases of the respiratory illness, but no fatality. Mumbai logged two cases in the last 24 hours, said the bulletin. Man sets godown on fire in Maharashtra's Thane district; no casualties

A godown was allegedly set on fire by a man in Maharashtra's Thane district, and no casualties were reported, police said on Sunday. A blaze erupted at the godown of a decorator in Bharat Nagar area of Shelar Naka in Dombivili around 12.45 am on Saturday, an official said. Based on a complaint, an offence under section 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to cause damage) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against a man who allegedly set the premises on fire, inspector Pandurang Tithe of Tilak Nagar police station said. The godown was completely gutted in the blaze and materials worth Rs 60,000 were destroyed, he said. The police have identified the accused based on the CCTV footage from the area and further probe is underway, the official said.
