Karnataka govt announces 1-day state mourning for late Minister Umesh Katti

The Karnataka government declared one-day state mourning across the state on Wednesday as a mark of respect on the passing away of Minister Umesh Katti, who died last night due to heart attack. The state government in its official notification said that the last rites of the minister, who held the food, civil supplies and consumer affairs, and forest portfolios, will be performed with full state honours. It has also declared a holiday to all schools and colleges, along with government offices in Belagavi district on Wednesday. Katti had died due to heart attack at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Tuesday night. He was 61. According to sources, Katti collapsed in the bathroom of his Dollar's Colony residence here and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors there said Katti had no pulse when he was brought in. Karnataka minister Umesh Katti dies at 61 due to cardiac arrest

Karnataka Minister Umesh Katti died due to cardiac arrest at a private hospital here on Tuesday night, official sources said. The minister for food, civil supplies and consumer affairs and forest was 61-years-old. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter. According to sources, Katti collapsed in the bathroom of his Dollar's Colony residence here and was rushed to the hospital. State revenue minister R Ashoka said according to doctors, Katti had no pulse when he was brought to the hospital. He termed Katti's death a huge loss to the BJP and to the Belagavi district. Bengaluru rains: Woman dies due to electrocution on a flooded road

A 23-year-old woman has allegedly died due to electrocution after she came into contact with an electric pole while navigating a road flooded with rain water at Siddapura here, police said on Tuesday. According to police sources, the incident is said to have taken place on Monday night, when the victim was returning home on her scooter. According to eyewitnesses, on reaching the stretch of a road that was waterlogged, the lady's vehicle broke down and she lost balance. As she was trying to regain balance to move ahead, she is said to have touched an electric pole nearby for support and got electrocuted. Locals rushed the woman to a hospital, where she succumbed, sources said. The deceased was working in the admin department of a private school. Investigation is on, they added.

Karnataka govt releases Rs 300 crore to manage floods in Bengaluru

As torrential downpour continues to create havoc in Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday night said the government has decided to release Rs 300 crore to manage the flood situation in the city. The chief minister chaired a meeting with senior ministers and officials in the night to take stock of the rain and flood situation in the state, especially the capital city, and the damages caused. The state government has decided to release Rs 600 crore to manage the rain and flood situation across the state. Karnataka sexual abuse case: Murugha Math seer sent to judicial custody

A local court here on Monday ordered the chief pontiff of Murugha Math Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, who is facing charges of sexual abuse of minor girls, to be sent to judicial custody till September 14. The judicial custody is for a period of nine days. The police did not seek extension of the police custody in which he was held since September 2. Following this, the Second Additional District and Sessions Court sent him to judicial custody. He was taken to the Chitradurga district jail after the court hearing. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said senior and experienced lawyers would be appointed in the legal team of the State to argue in the Supreme Court over the border row with Maharashtra. The border row between Karnataka and Maharashtra will come up for hearing in the Supreme Court on November 23. Senior andan experienced legal team will be appointed to effectively argue on behalf of Karnataka, Bommai told reporters at the airport here. Sexual abuse case: Seer remanded to Karnataka Police custody till Sept 5

Chief pontiff of Murugha Math Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, who has been arrested for alleged sexual abuse of two minor girls, was on Friday remanded to police custody till September 5. The seer was arrested on Thursday night and later developed health complications in jail. He was produced on Friday in a local court, where the police sought five days' custody. The seer wrapped himself in a white cloth around his saffron attire and was taken in a wheelchair to the court. Thick security cover was given all over the place right from the hospital, where he was taken after he complained of chest pain, to the court with barricades on key roads along the way. Sharanaru has been booked under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for allegedly sexually abusing two high school girls, studying in a school run by the Math and staying in hostel also belonging to it.

PM launches, lays foundation for projects worth Rs 38,000 cr in Mangaluru

Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation for mechanisation and industrialisation projects worth around Rs 3,800 crore. One of them that was worth over Rs 280 crore was for mechanisation of a berth for handling containers and other cargo undertaken by the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA). He laid the foundation of five projects worth around Rs 1,000 crore undertaken by the port. Further, the Prime Minister inaugurated two projects undertaken by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited -- BS VI upgradation project and a desalination plant worth Rs 1,830 crore and Rs 680 crore respectively. The desalination plant would help reduce dependency on fresh water and ensure regular supply of hydrocarbons and petrochemicals throughout the year, according to an official statement. The Centre has told the Karnataka High Court that Twitter "deliberately" remained non-compliant and defiant to the laws of the land and that the social media giant has no role to play in the security of the country. Karnataka seer Shivamurthy Sharanaru arrested in sexual assault case

Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, the chief pontiff of Murugha Math booked under the POCSO Act for alleged sexual abuse of high school girls was arrested on Thursday, police sources said. After interrogation since this evening, he has been taken into custody by the police, sources said, adding that due procedures are being followed. The Mysuru city police on Saturday had filed an FIR against the seer under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and certain sections of the Indian Penal Code for the alleged sexual abuse. The FIR was registered against a total of five people, including the warden of the monastery's hostel, based on the complaint by an officer of the District Child Protection Unit. Police questioned the warden earlier in the day.
