Facing the challenge of retaining the status of India's tiger state, Madhya Pradesh lost 34 big cats in 2022 as compared to just 15 in Karnataka, its nearest competitor in housing the number of tigers in the country, according to official data. The deaths were reported in the survey year for the country's tiger census, whose results will be announced later in 2023. A senior forest department official said it is a mystery as to why Madhya Pradesh has recorded higher tiger deaths than the southern state though both had almost the same number of big cats as per the 2018 count. The party, in a statement, on Wednesday said the senior BJP leader will visit some key 'mutts' (religious organisations) in the southern state.
