New JNU rules: Up to Rs 50,000 fine for violence, dharna on campus

Students can face a penalty of up to Rs 20,000 and even cancellation of admission for holding dharnas or a fine of up to Rs 30,000 for resorting to violence at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, its latest rules stipulate. As per the new rules, a student may face a fine of Rs 50,000 fine for physical violence, abuse and manhandling towards another student, staff, or faculty members. Students and teachers of the university have condemned the new rules and termed them "draconian". Meanwhile, the JNU Students' Union has called a meeting of all student organisations on Thursday to discuss the new rules. The 10-page 'Rules of Discipline and proper conduct of students of JNU' has laid out punishments for different kinds of acts like protests and forgery, and procedures for proctorial enquiry and recording a statement. The punishment ranges from a fine of Rs 5,000 to Rs 50,000 or rustication and cancellation of admission. According to the document, the rules came into effect on February 3.

At least 80 per cent of associate professors have been waiting for promotions for more than five years while promotions of 90 per cent of women faculty are due, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) alleged on Tuesday. At least 73 per cent of assistant professors and 80 per cent of associate professors have been waiting for promotions for more than five years now, a JNUTA office bearer claimed. He further said that several assistant professors have held the position for 10 to 12 years, before being promoted as associate professors and that, at least 90 per cent of women faculty were due for promotions. JNU begins process for admission to postgraduate programmes: Official

Jawaharlal Nehru University has started the process for admission to postgraduate programmes and candidates can fill out application forms online till October 25. The classes for first-year postgraduate students will begin on November 28, a university official said. JNU is offering admissions in MA, MSc, MCA, MPH, M.Tech, PG Diploma and Advanced Diploma programmes for the academic session 2022-23 through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-PG. This is the first time the university is admitting students to postgraduate courses through CUET. The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced CUET-PG results on September 26. Students and university teachers had voiced concerns regarding the delay in starting the admission process. JNU begins registration for admission to undergraduate courses via CUET

Jawaharlal Nehru University on Wednesday began the registration process for admission to its undergraduate programmes through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). Candidates can apply for undergraduate programmes at the university through the official website of JNUEE. Upon visiting the website, one needs to click on the link about applications for BA programmes. That will open a portal where candidates can log in with their CUET-UG application number and date of birth as password, a JNU official said. JNU to resume physical classes for all courses from August 3

Jawaharlal Nehru University will resume in-person classes for students of all courses from the next month, according to an official notification issued on Wednesday. The notification asked students to attend physical classes from August 3. JNU, which was closed in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reopened in February to resume offline classes for all students except those in the first year. However, the students had alleged that several centres, including the School of International Studies (SIS), did not resume offline classes. JNU extends registration dates for winter semester till 13th of May

The Jawaharlal Nehru University has extended the date for the registration for the winter semester to May 13. This was the second time that the date of registration, which began on April 27, has been extended. In a notice issued on Tuesday, Manoj Kumar Manuj, the assistant registrar, said, "This is hereby brought to the notice of all concerned that the last date of registration for the continuing students (admitted in monsoon semester 2021 of the academic year 2021-2022) has been extended further beyond 09.05.2022 till 13.05.2022." JNU to institute Ambedkar centre for research on sociopolitical equality

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will soon have a Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Centre and chair that will carry out research on bridging the socio-political and economic inequalities. The centre and the academic chair were agreed to be established at the varsity through an agreement between JNU and the Dr Ambedkar International Centre (DAIC) of the Ministry of Social Justice.
