US Vice President Kamala Harris assured Asian leaders Friday that the United States is here to stay as she pitched Washington as a reliable economic partner committed to the region and its prosperity. Harris told leaders at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit that the U.S. is a proud Pacific power and has a vital interest in promoting a region that is open, interconnected, prosperous, secure and resilient. The United States has an enduring economic commitment to the Indo-Pacific, one that is measured not in years, but in decades, and generations, she said. And there is no better economic partner for this region than the United States of America. Harris postponed the start of her speech after receiving news that North Korea had fired an intercontinental ballistic missile that landed near Japanese waters, convening an emergency meeting of the leaders of Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Canada in which she slammed the missile test as a brazen violation of multipl

India doesn't believe in world order where nations deemed superior: Rajnath

India does not believe in a world order where a few countries are considered superior to others, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday and noted that the possibility of a global framework could be envisaged if security becomes a truly collective enterprise. In an address at the National Defence College, he also sounded a note of caution about cyber warfare and said it has increased the vulnerability of critical infrastructure. "I would like to tell you that conduct of our strategic policy should be moral. India does not believe in a world order where few are considered superior to others," Singh said. "India's actions are guided by the very essence of human equality and dignity, which is a part of our ancient ethos and its strong moral foundations, give us our political strength. Even our freedom struggle was based on the bedrock of high moral values," he noted. His comments came amid increasing concerns over China's aggressive military posturing along the Line of Actual

Canada's foreign minister warns businesses against deepening China ties

Canada's foreign minister said Wednesday that China is an increasingly disruptive, global power and warned businesses against deepening their ties, saying there were geopolitical risks. Foreign Affairs Minister Mlanie Joly made the remarks at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto ahead of her government introducing a Indo-Pacific strategy next month. The China of 1970 is not the China of today. China is an increasingly disruptive, global power, Joly said. It seeks to shape the global environment into one that is more permissive for interests and values that increasingly depart from ours. Joly said Canada has serious concerns about Beijing undermining global security, commerce and peace. Part of that includes credible accounts of human rights abuse and crimes against humanity in the Xinjiang region against the Muslim minority known as the Uyghur. What I would like to say to Canadians doing business in and with China: You need to be clear-eyed. The decisions

US to help India play 'broader stabilising role' in Indo-Pacific: Pentagon

The US will partner India to help New Delhi play a "broader stabilising role" in the strategic Indo-Pacific region, a senior defence official from the Pentagon has said. The Biden administration has taken several steps to strengthen India-US defence relationship since it assumed power in January 2021. As India is taking a look at how it accelerates its own defence modernisation, in order to expand the role that it already plays as what I would describe as a net security provider in the Indian Ocean region, but more broadly in the Indo-Pacific, the United States wants to make sure that we are partnering with India to better enable it to play that broader stabilising role in the region, a senior defence official told PTI on Saturday. We have been very focused on ways that we are advancing interoperability between the US and the Indian military. Obviously, the signature initiative I would highlight here is the tri-service exercise that we have between, which from our view is better ...

India stands for rules-based maritime boundaries in the Indo-Pacific in which no nation, howsoever big, may be allowed to exclude others from its fair use, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Saturday, amid China's increasing assertiveness in the region. In his address to the heads of Asian Coast Guard agencies, the defence minister also called for effective collaboration among maritime nations to deal with challenges to maritime safety. Singh asserted that India, throughout history, has been a peace-loving society which has never invaded any foreign land and has always respected the territorial integrity of other countries, while treating them as equal partners. He stressed that oceanic space should be respected as a global commons to benefit all humanity in an environmentally sustainable way. "We stand for open, free, rules-based maritime borders in Indo-Pacific, in which no nation, howsoever big, may be allowed to appropriate the global common or exclude others from its fair
