Policy must to ensure airlines maintain 4-6 months of cash reserves: CAPA

Indian airlines industry will continue to be sick unless there are policies in place to ensure that the operators have at least 4-6 months of cash kept in reserves for continuity of operations, according to global consultancy and aviation firm CAPA. CAPA said it estimates the domestic airline industry could post losses to the tune of USD 1.4-1.7 billion or more losses this fiscal. The two listed airlines, IndiGo and SpiceJet, have already reported losses of Rs 1,064.30 crore and Rs 789 crore, respectively, in the April-June quarter of the current fiscal. IndiGo to launch Mumbai-Istanbul flights from Jan 1, bookings begin

No-frills airline IndiGo on Tuesday said it will connect the city with Istanbul in Turkey from early next year. The non-stop air services on the new route, which will commence from January 1, will be operated daily. Bookings for these flights began from Tuesday, the airline said in a statement. These new routes and additional frequencies will enhance international connectivity between India and Turkey and beyond, through IndiGo's code share with Turkish Airlines, it said. "In line with our vision to strengthen international connectivity from India, we have launched a new connection between Mumbai- Istanbul. This will enhance international capacity and offer more options to the consumers," said Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales, IndiGo.

Email threat to blow up IndiGo flight turns out to be hoax, case registered

A case was registered after an unidentified person sent an email to the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) threatening to blow up a flight of IndiGo airline, a Mumbai police official said on Sunday. The email threat, which was received on Saturday night, turned out to be a hoax after nothing suspicious was found post a thorough check of the aircraft, the Sahar police station official said. The email had a sentence that read "I will blow up flight 6E 6045", he said, adding that an FIR has been registered under Indian Penal Code section 506B (issuing death threat) and other offences. IndiGo, in a statement, said "due to a specific bomb threat, IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Ahmedabad was impacted on October 1, 2022." Telangana Minister for IT and Industries K T Rama Rao has asked IndiGo Airlines to start respecting local languages after news emanated that a Telugu passenger was asked to vacate her seat at the exit as she reportedly failed to understand security procedures explained in English and Hindi. IndiGo plane enroute to Udaipur suffers engine vibrations; returns to Delhi

An IndiGo aircraft enroute to Udaipur returned to the national capital on Thursday due to "engine vibrations" and the plane has been grounded, according to a senior DGCA official. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will probe the incident. This is the second such incident during the day where a plane returned to Delhi airport due to technical issues. The official said that an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Udaipur, operated by an A320 neo aircraft, did an air turnback after there were vibrations in engine 2. The plane landed safely and has been grounded. DGCA will conduct a detailed probe into the incident, the official added. A statement from IndiGo on the incident was awaited. Earlier in the day, a SpiceJet plane, carrying 89 passengers, that took off for Nashik from the national capital returned midway due to an "autopilot" snag. The incident will also be probed by the DGCA.

Virgin Atlantic expands India presence with codeshare agreement with IndiGo

The country's largest airline IndiGo and British carrier Virgin Atlantic on Wednesday announced a codeshare agreement. The agreement will allow Virgin Atlantic to sell seats to passengers connecting onto IndiGo flights. The initial codeshare destinations in India include Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Goa, Delhi and Mumbai. The additional destinations will include Kochi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Pune, Coimbatore, Nagpur, Vadodara, Indore and Visakhapatnam, a release said. Under the codeshare partnership, customers booking a Virgin Atlantic ticket will be able to fly on the airline's London Heathrow to Delhi and Mumbai flights and connect to and from 7 additional cities in India. IndiGo CEO agrees to 2-year non-compete curbs after stepping down in Sep

InterGlobe Aviation CEO Ronojoy Dutta, who will be stepping down next month ahead of his tenure, has agreed to an enhanced two-year non-compete period wherein he will not engage with any business that is similar or in competition with the company. Dutta is to step down as the Whole Time Director and CEO of InterGlobe Aviation, the parent of the country's largest airline IndiGo, on September 30 whereas his current tenure is till January 23, 2024. On Tuesday, the company said it will seek shareholders' approval for the remuneration of Dutta for this fiscal "as minimum remuneration in the event of absence or inadequacy of profits". The e-voting on the proposal will be open from August 31 to September 29 and the results will be declared on or before October 1. IndiGo plane faces engine stall warning for few secs on 'wake turbulence'

An Airbus plane operated by IndiGo faced "engine stall" warning for a few seconds as it flew into wake turbulence caused by a Boeing 777 aircraft that flew from the opposite side. The mid-air incident happened for IndiGo's Guwahati-Mumbai flight that was operated with am Airbus 320 ceo plane on Monday.
