No sector, fuel source should be singled out for action: India at COP27

No sector, fuel source or gas should be singled out for action in the fight against climate change, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav has said at the UN climate summit in Egypt. India had proposed on Saturday that the talks wrap up with a decision to "phase down all fossil fuels". The call received support from the European Union on Tuesday. Participating in a BASIC ((Brazil, South Africa, India and China) ministerial meeting on Tuesday night, Yadav said developing countries should be provided their fair share of the full carbon budget and it can be done by "monetising the carbon debt of the developed countries". "In climate action, no sector, no fuel source and no gas should be singled out for action. In the spirit of the Paris Agreement, countries will do what is suitable as per their national circumstances," Yadav said. India also clarified that just transition cannot mean de-carbonisation for all countries. "For India, just transition means transition to a low-carbon ...

India has potential to become world leader in EV production: Report

India has the potential to become the world leader in electric vehicles production, a research by Berkeley National Laboratory and UCLA said, underlining that making the transition from diesel-fuelled trucks to electric-charged will enable the country to meet the goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2070. India imports 88 per cent of the oil it uses and of the total petroleum consumed by the country's transport sector, nearly 60 per cent used by freight trucks. A study by the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on Monday revealed that electric trucks would be more affordable to operate than diesel and India could become a world leader in producing electric vehicles. Climate finance, tech needed to promote trust, transparency: India at COP27

Access to climate finance and technology in developing countries is a "must-have" to protect the earth and humanity from apocalyptic changes, India said at the ongoing UN climate summit in Egypt on Monday. Making an intervention at the High-Level Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Finance at COP27, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said a clear definition of climate finance is needed to promote transparency and trust in all multilateral discussions to address climate change. "Access to finance and technology in developing countries is a must-have if we expect to protect our earth and ourselves from apocalyptic changes. The commitment made by the developed countries to mobilise USD 100 billion from diverse sources by 2020 was a meagre amount and remains unachieved till now. The current needs of developing countries are estimated to be in the order of trillions," a statement quoted him as saying. At COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009, developed countries had committed to jointly ...

Congress yatra: Rahul blasts Centre over Agnipath, Chinese goods in India

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday claimed the 'Agnipath' recruitment scheme will adversely impact the morale of armed forces as he continued his attack on the Centre on a range of issues - from note ban to unemployment to inflation - during his Bharat Jodo Yatra which entered its 68th day. Speaking at a public meeting in Hingoli district of central Maharashtra, organised as part of the Congress's mass outreach programme, he hit out at the Narendra Modi government, claiming policies like 'Agnipath', note ban and Goods and Service Tax (GST) were formulated to instill fear among the people of the country. Gandhi alleged the prime minister wants 'Made in China' products as this will benefit "two-three billionaires" in the country. What is Narendra Modi ji doing? They (the BJP) are trying to spread fear, violence and hatred. Be it note ban, Agnipath, GST...all their policies only scare people. The one who gets scared, there is hatred in his heart which leads to division in the society
