Amid demands for snapping trade ties with China for its transgressions on the border, former Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya has opined that cutting trade with Beijing at this juncture would amount to sacrificing India's potential economic growth. Instead, Panagariya suggested that India should try to enter into free trade agreements (FTA) with countries such as the UK and the European Union to expand its trade. "Engaging China in a trade war at this juncture will mean sacrificing a considerable part of our potential growth... purely on economic grounds, it will be unwise to take any action in response to it (transgressions on the border)," the eminent economist told PTI. Indian and Chinese troops clashed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 and the face-off resulted in "minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides", according to the Indian Army. Amid demands by the Opposition for a discussion in Parliament on the Sino-India border issue, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday cited past instances when the UPA government had denied deliberations in the House on such matters and said it is not good to rake up sensitive issues politically. Responding to questions on the issue by reporters in Parliament complex, Rijiju said the border issue is very sensitive and there is a convention in Parliament of not discussing such matters in the House. "You would recall that in 2005 when I was in the Opposition I had raised the issue of the China border. Then, late Pranab Mukherjee was the Leader of the House and then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called me and said China border issue is very sensitive, therefore, it should not be discussed in Parliament and should be dealt with internally. We did not press," he said. In 2008, when the Chinese President visited India, BJP had once again demanded a discussion and gave a notice in Lok Sabha
AAP leader Sanjay Singh on Wednesday took a dig at the government for not discussing in Parliament the border tension with China, saying the ruling dispensation shows its "56-inch chest" to farmers but it becomes "0.56 inch before China". The AAP and several other opposition parties including the Congress, Janata Dal(United) staged a protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue on the parliament premises, demanding a discussion on the border tension and the latest Chinese aggression in Arunachal Pradesh. "The government is answerable to the people of this country and to parliament on the issue of tensions at the LAC (Line of Actual Control). This government boasts of its 56-inch chest in front of protesting farmers but it becomes 0.56 inch before China," Singh told reporters here. "Import from China is increasing. Why the government is doing so? Our soldiers sacrificed their lives for safeguarding borders. Then why the government is promoting trade with China?" he asked. Since the

The Congress on Thursday accused the central government of evading a debate on India-China border face-off and asked why the Modi government has been running away from the issue. AICC head of media and publicity department Pawan Khera wondered why Prime Minister Narendra Modi is silent on China, and that whenever he does speak on it, he gives the country a clean chit. Khera alleged that when Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he was very keen on introducing Mandarin in its government schools, a proposal that was opposed by the Congress party. He also made the allegation that the BJP used a Chinese company in elections which, the central government had said, was a threat to Indian sovereignty. A company which was blacklisted by World Bank, USA, and Europe was given the contract to install smart metres in the border district of Jammu and Kashmir, he said. China on Wednesday said it was opposed to the joint Indo-US military exercises being held near the Line of Actual Control (LAC), asserting that it violates the spirit of the two border agreements signed between New Delhi and Beijing. The 18th edition of the India-US joint military exercise 'Yudh Abhyas' is currently underway in Uttarakhand, about 100 km from the Line of Actual Control (LAC). It aims to enhance interoperability and share expertise between both armies in peacekeeping and disaster relief operations. The nearly two-week exercise began earlier this month. The joint military exercise between India and the US close to the LAC at the China-India border violates the spirit of the agreement between China and India in 1993 and 1996, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a media briefing here. It does not serve the mutual trust between China and India, he said in response to a question posed by a correspondent from Pakistan. The Chinese Foreign Ministry's refer
