Indian aviation market promising but taxation always an issue: IATA chief

The Indian civil aviation market has exciting and significant opportunities but taxation has always been an issue which also makes the industry less competitive, according to IATA chief Willie Walsh. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a global grouping that represents around 300 airlines, including those from India, and its members account for nearly 83 per cent of the global air traffic. India is seeing a "much stronger recovery" than the Asia Pacific region in general but there could be challenges in terms of getting new aircraft and spare parts, as per IATA. "The market in India... The opportunity in India has to be considered to be very very significant. There are issues in India not unique to aviation but the regulatory regime and bureaucracy can hinder the pace (of growth)," Walsh said during an interaction with reporters from the Asia Pacific region earlier this week here. While the Indian market has not seen the pace of growth that was seen in China, the

Pakistan blocks $225 million in airline funds for repatriation: IATA

Pakistan has withheld USD 225 million of airline funds for repatriation, the IATA has said, making it one of the top five countries in the world along with Nigeria and Bangladesh, which used the funds as an easy way to shore up their depleted treasuries. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Wednesday warned that the amount of airline funds for repatriation being blocked by governments has risen by more than 25 per cent (USD 394 million) in the last six months. The IATA represents around 83 per cent of the global air traffic and represents around 300 airlines. More than 27 countries and territories are blocking funds from repatriation, the IATA said in a press release. Nigeria tops the list with USD 551 million of blocked funds, followed by Pakistan at USD 225 million and Bangladesh coming in the third position with USD 208 million, it said. Lebanon (USD 144 million) and Algeria (USD 140 million) are the other two countries to feature in this list, it added. IATA

Global airline industry set to post $6.9 billion loss in 2022: IATA

The global airline industry is projected to report a lower loss at USD 6.9 billion in 2022, mainly due to stronger passenger yields and cost control by carriers amid rising fuel prices, according to industry body IATA. In June, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) projected the industry loss at USD 9.7 billion. In October 2021, it forecast a loss of USD 11.6 billion for this year. On Tuesday, IATA said the global airline industry is expected to return to profitability in 2023 and post a small net profit of USD 4.7 billion. After being significantly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, the airline industry is on the recovery path. In 2022, airline net loss is expected to be USD 6.9 billion. This is significantly better than loss of USD 42 billion and USD 137.7 billion in 2021 and 2020, respectively, it said. "We are on the right path... but still a long way to go," IATA Director General Willie Walsh said at a briefing here on Tuesday. For 2022, IATA said the improve

India has potential to produce sustainable aviation fuel: IATA executive

India is among the countries that has the largest potential to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which will be a key enabler for the global airlines industry in reducing emissions, according to an IATA executive. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is a grouping of international airlines. Sebastian Mikosz, Senior Vice President for Environment & Sustainability at IATA, on Tuesday also suggested extending incentives for entities to enter the market for production of SAF. At a media roundtable here, Mikosz said that India is one of the countries which has the largest potential in producing SAF. Airlines will buy SAF, which is expected to account for around 65 per cent of decarbonisation and will be a key enabler in reducing emissions, he added. For production of SAF, there should be access to feedstock like biomass, he said and added that environmental problem has to be tackled at the global level. Earlier in the day, Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal said

India a key aviation market; air travel demand to be robust, says IATA

India is a key aviation market for the Asia Pacific region as well as the rest of the world and is expected to see robust air travel demand, global airlines' grouping IATA said on Tuesday amid the country's domestic air passenger traffic inching towards pre-COVID levels. After being significantly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian aviation sector is on the recovery path and airlines are also ramping up their staff as well as expanding routes to cater to the rising travel demand. On October 9, the daily number of domestic air passengers touched 4 lakh, nearing the pre-COVID level and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described the trend as a "great sign". India's civil aviation sector is poised for phenomenal growth in terms of passengers, aircraft and airport. The country is projected to have 40 crore air travellers, including domestic and international, by 2027, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said in August. During an online briefing on Tuesday, IATA's ..

Global air passenger numbers to exceed pre-COVID level in 2024: IATA

The total number of air passengers in the world will reach the four-billion mark in 2024, exceeding the 2019 pre-Covid level by three per cent, global airlines body IATA said on Wednesday. In 2021, overall traveller numbers were 47 per cent of the pre-COVID level, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) mentioned. "This is expected to improve to 83 per cent in 2022, 94 per cent in 2023, 103 per cent in 2024 and 111 per cent in 2025," it added. IATA's Director General Willie Walsh said the trajectory for the recovery in passenger numbers from COVID-19 was not changed by the Omicron variant. "People want to travel. And when travel restrictions are lifted, they return to the skies," he noted. There is still a long way to go to reach a normal state of affairs, but the forecast for the evolution in passenger numbers gives good reason to be optimistic," Walsh stated. IATA represents some 290 airlines comprising 83 per cent of global air traffic.
