Electronic gaming can result in cardiac arrhythmias in children: Study

Computer gaming might create life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias in vulnerable youngsters whose tendency may have previously gone unreported, according to a new study.The researchers observed an uncommon yet distinct pattern in children who lose consciousness while playing video games.The findings of the study were published in the journal of the Heart Rhythm Society, the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society, and the Pediatric & Congenital Electrophysiology Society."Video games may represent a serious risk to some children with arrhythmic conditions; they might be lethal in patients with predisposing, but often previously unrecognized arrhythmic conditions," explained lead investigator Claire M. Lawley, MBBS, PhD, The Heart Centre for Children, Sydney Children's Hospitals Network, Sydney, Australia. One in 20 people suffer long-term effects after infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, according to one of the largest such studies to date. The research, published recently in the journal Nature Communications, found that long-COVID symptoms were more likely following severe infections requiring hospitalisation. The most reported long-COVID symptoms included breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations, and confusion, or 'brain fog', the researchers said. Long-COVID was also more likely in individuals who were older, female and those from deprived communities, they said. The Long-CISS (COVID In Scotland Study) -- found that 1 in 20 people who took part in the research had not recovered from having COVID-19 at their most recent follow up -- between six and 18 months following infection with SARS-CoV-2. Govt to soon launch national tele-mental health prog, toll-free helpline no

The government is working on launching a national tele-mental health programme and a toll-free helpline number soon to enable wider access to mental health assistance across the country. The national tele-mental health programme (NTMHP) was first announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2022-23. "The pandemic has accentuated mental health problems in people of all ages. To better the access to quality mental health counselling and care services, a 'National Tele-Mental Health Programme' will be launched," she had said. This will include a network of 23 tele-mental health centres of excellence, with the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) being the nodal centre and the International Institute of Information Technology, Bengaluru (IIITB) providing technological support.
