GST impact: Blue Star reviews expansion plan

Air conditioner major Blue Star has said that it is re-evaluating its plan to set up a green field manufacturing facility in Jammu, in the wake of change of tax benefits after GST implementation. The company is expecting a report from KPMG on whether it will be a prudent investment in the post GST regime, and will take a decision in November, this year, said B Thiagarajan, joint managing director, Blue Star.The decision on this plant will also have an impact on its plan to set up a facility in Sri City, an integrated business city in Andhra Pradesh.Speaking to the reporters after announcing the company's plans on expanding residential water purifier business, he said, "We had to put the plan on hold because the plant make sense only in case the erstwhile CENVAT benefit is fully available in the GST regime."The company has been looking for clarity on the tax benefits once the GST was announced and Jammu and Kashmir announced to join the regime and now the clarity has come in. ...

Cement prices to remain tepid as GST, Rera and monsoon hit demand

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016 (RERA) implementation, together with good monsoons, cooled off cement prices across the country by 2-3 per cent on an average in the immediate months of the new tax regime. It is expected that prices will continue to remain low during the second quarter until the bulk of cement dealers move over to the new tax framework.Sector analysts opined that the northern, central and eastern markets were particularly hit as most of the dealer base resorted to destocking in June in anticipation of GST and the pace of restocking is not satisfactory. Moreover, dealers, particularly in the tier 2-3 markets are still sceptical of the input tax credit affecting volume uptake."It is expected that prices will continue to remain subdued in the second quarter as dealers, mostly in the northern-eastern markets are yet to understand the GST implications and how to claim input tax credit", an analyst with brokerage firm ..
