The government has spent Rs 91.96 crore on advertisements in print media through the Central Bureau of Communication so far in this financial year, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said on Tuesday. The government has also spent Rs 76.84 crore on advertisements in electronic media, Thakur said in a written response to a question by CPI-M leader M Selvaraj in Lok Sabha. In 2014-15, the government had spent Rs 424.84 crore on advertisements in print media and Rs 473.67 crore on electronic media advertisements through the Central Bureau of Communication, the minister said. The expenditure was Rs 508.22 crore (print) and Rs 531.60 crore (electronic) in 2015-16; Rs 468.53 crore (print) and Rs 609.15 crore (electronic) in 2016-17; and Rs 636.09 (print) and Rs 468.92 (electronic) in 2017-18. The government has selected a total of 67 entries with an investment potential of Rs 42,500 crore under the production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for specialty steel. The proposed investments are expected to generate 70,000 job opportunities and add 26 million tonnes of speciality steel capacity in the country. A total of 79 applications were received from 35 small and large steel-making companies with investment commitments totalling Rs 46,000 crore to add downstream capacity of 28 million tonnes (MT) by 2030, the steel ministry said in a statement. A total of 1.5 lakh Covid vaccine doses have been procured by the government from Zydus Cadila at Rs 375.90 per jab (including GST), Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar informed the Lok Sabha on Friday. As on December 5, 2022, a total of 102.54 crore first doses and a total of 95.09 crore second doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered. A total of 22.29 crore precaution doses have also been administered, Pawar said in a written reply. She further said that 90 per cent of population aged 12 and above in the country have been covered by both doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

The government is working on ways to contain surge in imports of non-essential goods with an aim to boost the country's exports and reduce trade deficit, an official said. The commerce ministry has identified those products and have sent communications to the line ministries to work on remedial measures for cutting down those imports, the official said. According to the ministry's data, imports during April-October this fiscal have increased to USD 436.81 billion as against USD 328.14 billion in the same period last year. Trade deficit for April-October 2022 has widened to USD 173.46 billion as against USD 94.16 billion in April-October 2021. Another official said that it is the commerce ministry's mandate to constantly monitor trends in imports and exports, and ascertain reasons behind those trends. The government has recognised as many as 84,102 entities as startups as on November 30 this year, Parliament was informed on Wednesday. These startups are eligible for availing host of incentives, including income tax benefits under the Startup India scheme, launched in January 2016. Under this initiative, entities are recognized as startups by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). "As on 30th November 2022, 84,102 entities have been recognised as startups by DPIIT," Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Parkash said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. He said recognised startups are spread across 56 sectors, including agriculture, biotechnology and chemicals. Startup India was launched by the government on January 16, 2016. Debt-ridden Vodafone Idea's proposal to issue Rs 1,600-crore debentures to mobile tower vendor ATC Telecom Infrastructure has lapsed in absence of any response from the government on the conversion of interest dues into equity, the telecom operator said on Tuesday. Last month, shareholders of debt-ridden Vodafone Idea (VIL) approved issuing optionally convertible debentures (OCD) worth Rs 1,600 crore to ATC Telecom Infrastructure on a preferential basis to settle dues of the infrastructure vendor by converting the due amount into equity, if the amount remained unpaid in 18 months. The OCD issue for ATC was subject to certain conditions including the approval of the government. VIL was of the view that by the time of issuing OCDs, the government would have converted the interest from deferment of adjusted gross revenue and spectrum dues owed by the company into equity. The government's fertiliser subsidy will rise to Rs 2.3-2.5 lakh crore in this fiscal but the bill may fall by 25 per cent in the 2023-24 financial year with moderation in global prices, according to industry body FAI. Fertilisers Association of India (FAI) expressed concern that the fixed cost of urea has not been increased affecting the viability of urea plants. It also pointed out that the industry is running on a very thin margin, which is hampering new investments in this sector. The industry body said there is sufficient availability of fertilisers, including urea and DAP, for the ongoing rabi (winter-sown) season. "We estimate the fertiliser subsidy bill at Rs 2.3 lakh crore to Rs 2.5 lakh crore," FAI President K S Raju told reporters here late Monday. This has helped insulate the farmers from the impact of a steep increase in the cost of all fertilisers due to sharp rise in international prices of fertilisers and raw materials, he added. Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Monday expressed concern over erosion in soil fertility due to excess use of chemical fertilisers and said the government is taking measures to promote natural farming. The minister was speaking after inaugurating the National Conference on Soil Health Management for Sustainable Farming, organised by Niti Aayog. According to an official statement, Tomar said due to chemical farming and other reasons, soil fertility is getting eroded and climate change is going to be a big concern for the country as well as the world. The minister said lack of organic carbon in the soil is a serious concern for us. "To meet this serious challenge and for better soil health, we have to promote natural farming, which is beneficial for the environment," he added.
