Gig workforce to add 9-11 million jobs by 2025 in India, says report

With more and more companies preferring to hire employees on project basis, a report has revealed that there is likely to be 90-110 lakh additions to the gig workforce by 2025, a report said on Wednesday. The gig economy has been one of the most pivotal economic shifts in a long time and people are choosing gig jobs because it works with their lifestyle, they can choose when and how much they work, or it allows them to earn money between jobs, global job site Indeed said in the report. According to the report, companies have also started investing in gig work platforms and processes, which indicates how integral they are to the future of jobs growth in India. A majority of the employers surveyed (58 per cent) estimate the gig workforce to grow to 90-110 lakh, or even exceed this number by 2025, the report revealed. 52% gig workers feel work environment makes it difficult to upskill: Report

Over 52 per cent of gig workers or contract employees feel that their work environment makes it challenging for them to upskill or find new job opportunities, according to a report. According to the report by CIIE.CO, a startup platform built at Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad, most young respondents increasingly look towards gig economy platforms for their first jobs. However, over 52 per cent of gig workers said the gig working environment makes it difficult to upskill or find new job opportunities, it added. The report further analysed that gigs offered by platforms initially hook individuals with the opportunity of short-term income but keep them employed for prolonged periods of time in a career without a long-term growth trajectory. Social security benefit to be extended to platform, gig workers, says FM

The government on Monday said social security benefits will be extended to platform and gig workers. Presenting the Union Budget for 2021-22, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government also proposed setting up of a portal to collect information on gig-workers, building and construction workers, among others. A portal will be set up to collect info on gig & platform workers, building & construction workers, among others to provide them benefits like health, credit (easy financing), food and others, Sitharaman said in her budget speech in Lok Sabha. She noted that for the first time Code on Social Security Code 2020 has made provision for universalisation of social security for the entire workforce including gig and platform workers. The gig and platform workers are those who are engaged by various e-commerce businesses like UBER, OLA, SWIGGY and Zomato.
