Tauktae: IMD predicts light thunderstorms, rain over parts of Gujarat

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday predicted light to moderate rain over isolated places in Gujarat's Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Narmada, Tapi, Surat, Bharuch, Dang and Dahod.The downpour will be accompanied by light thunderstorms with lightning and surface wind 30-40 kmph (in gust).The predicted weather is very likely to occur during the next three hours, as per the weather department.The IMD reported that heavy to very heavy rainfalls over parts of Gujarat will occur on May 17."Heavy to very heavy falls with extremely heavy falls at isolated places very likely over Saurashtra and Kutch, Diu and south Gujarat region on 17th and heavy to very heavy falls at a few places with extremely heavy falls (>= 20 cm)," tweeted IMD.In a series of tweets, the IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the Arabian sea off Gujarat coast till May 18."Fishermen are advised not to venture into Eastcentral Arabian Sea along & off Karnataka coast till 17th Morning and into ...

Cyclone Tauktae: All but 19 fishing boats returned to Maha, Gujarat ports

With Cyclone Tauktae fast approaching the Gujarat coast, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Sunday said that all fishing boats, except 18 in Maharashtra and one in Gujarat, have reached their harbours or taken shelter at nearby ports. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Tauktae has intensified into a "very severe cyclonic storm" and is very likely to reach the Gujarat coast in the evening hours of May 17 and cross it between Porbandar and Mahuva in Bhavnagar district around the early morning of May 18. "Pre-emptive measures in full swing for Maharashtra & Gujarat. Barring 18 boats from Maharashtra and one boat from Gujarat, all boats have either returned harbour or taken shelter in nearby ports," the ICG said on Twitter. The IMD said squally wind with speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over the northeast Arabian Sea and along and off south Gujarat and Daman and Diu coasts from Sunday morning. Cyclone Tauktae: 71 relief camps opened across Kerala for affected people

The Kerala government on Saturday announced that 71 relief camps have opened across the state to help those affected by Cyclone Tauktae.In a tweet by the Kerala CMO, it read, "In view of Cyclone Tauktae, 71 relief camps have been opened across the state to shelter those affected by sea erosion. Currently, the camps house 2,094 people from 543 families."In the wake of cyclone Tauktae, the Indian Navy's relief team from Southern Naval Command along with one Quick Reaction Team from INS Dronacharya provided assistance to flood hit villages of Malaghapady, Companypadi, and Maruvakkad in Chellanam panchayat at Kochi on Saturday.As per an official statement of Southern Naval Command, teams undertook rescue of personnel, provisioning of food and water and shifting of people trapped in houses to relief camp at St Mary's High School Chellanam in the harsh weather conditions."The CS Tauktae lay centred at 2330 IST of 15th May over Arabian Sea about 170 km southwest of Panjim-Goa, 520 km south .
