Rahul Gandhi's remarks harm Congress, party sinking: Kiren Rijiju

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju Thursday said Rahul Gandhi's remarks have caused harm to the Congress whose leaders were worried that the party's fortunes were sinking. Rijiju's remarks came after a Gujarat court convicted Gandhi for his 'Modi surname' comments and handed out a two-year jail term to the Lok Sabha member from Wayanad. The court granted Gandhi bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court. "Whatever Rahul Gandhi says causes harm. It causes harm not only to the party but also to others. It is not good for the nation," Rijiju told reporters when asked to comment on the Congress leader's conviction. The senior BJP leader said some Congress MPs had told him that Gandhi's style of functioning was affecting the main opposition party. "Some Congress leaders have told me that Rahul Gandhi's style of functioning has messed up things. It is causing harm to their party. Their party is sinking," Rijiju said.

Court sentences Rahul to 2 yrs in jail; grants bail, suspends sentence

A court in Surat in Gujarat on Thursday held Congress leader Rahul Gandhi guilty in a 2019 criminal defamation case filed in connection with his "Modi surname" remarks. The case was filed against Gandhi for his alleged how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname? remarks on a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi. The Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad made the remarks while addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma had last week concluded hearing final arguments from both sides and set March 23 to pronounce its judgment in the four-year-old defamation case.

Punjab Congress chief comes down heavily on AAP govt over Amritpal issue

Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Wednesday slammed the AAP government for alleged botched up police operation to nab radical preacher Amritpal Singh. In a statement, he said people's trust and confidence in the state government was at its lowest ebb ever in history. "It won't be any exaggeration that Bhagwant Mann is spearheading the most inept state government in the country which hurtles towards a new embarrassment every new day," Warring said, adding that the absence of governance in Punjab is a matter of concern for every Punjabi. He said there are tell tale signs that the state government's intelligence failed miserably in catching the Khalistan sympathiser even after such 'meticulous' planning as is being claimed by the state government. Notably, the Punjab Police on Wednesday reiterated that they are making all-out efforts to trace Amritpal against whom a lookout circular and a non-bailable warrant had been issued. "Our efforts are on to arrest him," he

SC-appointed committee will be 'clean chit' panel: Cong over Adani row

The Congress Wednesday asserted that the only way to comprehensively investigate the Adani issue is through a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and claimed that the Supreme Court-appointed expert committee would be a "clean chit" panel for the government. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh claimed the government wants the demand for JPC to be taken back and in return it would take back the demand for apology over Rahul Gandhi's remarks in the UK. He said there was no question of an apology and the demand for JPC is non-negotiable. Addressing a press conference as the party's total questions asked under its 'Hum Adani Ke Hain Kaun' initiative reached the 100-mark, Ramesh said the party has previously posed 99 questions to Prime Minister Narendra Modi since February 5 in connection with the Adani issue. "We conclude the series with a final question asking whether you will act in national interest using the vast army of investigative agencies at your disposal," Ramesh said. T

Ruckus in Punjab Assembly as Speaker disallows Congress' adjournment motion

Noisy scenes were seen in the Punjab Assembly on Wednesday after the Speaker did not allow the adjournment motion of the Congress on the law and order issue in the state. As Question Hour began in the budget session of the Vidhan Sabha here, Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa asked the Speaker about the adjournment motion on the law and order issue moved by his party. Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan told Bajwa that it has been disallowed. Bajwa asked the Speaker to give the Congress members some time to speak on the law and order issue in the state. It is wrong, said Bajwa when the Speaker did not allow the adjournment motion. All the Congress MLAs then rushed to the Well of the House and shouted slogans. The Speaker asked the Congress legislators that in Delhi, their party says that the House was not being allowed to run. How investments are coming to Odisha if there is lawlessness, asks Patnaik

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday wondered how investors are making a beeline in the state if there is lawlessness as alleged by the opposition BJP and Congress. All over the country, investors talk about the fact that how peaceful Odisha is, Patnaik said while replying to the debate on home and general administration demands in the Assembly. "Getting investment to a state is a reflection of its law and order situation. No investment comes when the law and order situation is poor in a state. Unemployment rate in Haryana over 6%, CM Khattar tells state Assembly

Haryana's unemployment rate is over just six per cent, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar informed the state Assembly on Tuesday and slammed the Congress for quoting unreliable figures from a body to target his government. Congress MLA Chiranjeev Rao, during Question Hour, had asked if the unemployment rate has increased in Haryana during the past eight years and, if so, the steps taken by the government to bring it down. Referring to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) figures tabled in the House as part of the reply to his question, the Congress MLA from Rewari said, "PLFS data has been quoted and if we go by that, according to this unemployment rate in Haryana is 9.3 per cent". But if we take CMIE (Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy) data, the unemployment rate in Haryana is 29.4 per cent," he said. However, Khattar, while giving the latest government figures, said in February 2023, the unemployment rate in the state stood at 6.46 per cent. The opposition parties often at

Lok Sabha adjourned till 2 pm amid uproar over Rahul's democracy remark

Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm Monday amid ruckus in the House over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's democracy remarks. As soon as the proceedings started, members of the treasury benches began raising the issue. Opposition members, including those from the Congress, also began shouting slogans demanding a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into alleged stock manipulation by the Adani Group. Speaker Om Birla repeatedly urged the members to allow the House to function. As the members refused to relent, Birla adjourned the proceedings. Parliament's Budget session has been a washout since the beginning of its second part on March 13, with the BJP demanding an apology from Gandhi. During his interactions in the UK, Gandhi had recently alleged that the structures of Indian democracy were under attack and there was a "full-scale assault" on the country's institutions.

Have sought time for Rahul Gandhi to speak in Lok Sabha tomorrow: Kharge

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said time has been sought for Rahul Gandhi to speak in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday and he will make his statement if allowed. Kharge also slammed the BJP-led government over the Delhi Police team reaching Gandhi's residence on Sunday to inquire about his "women are still being sexually assaulted" statement made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. "They are trying to divert attention from the issues we have been raising. It has been 46 days since the yatra was completed and they are asking now, 'whom did you meet'. Lakhs of people connected with the yatra and met him (Gandhi) for five minutes and they are asking to identify people," Kharge told reporters here on Monday before leaving to attend Parliament. Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole has said the police action against party leader Rahul Gandhi was a "cowardly" act by the panic-stricken Narendra Modi government.
