Coal import to be stopped by 2024, says Pralhad Joshi

Coal minister Pralhad Joshi on Thursday said that the import of dry fuel which has declined considerably will be stopped by 2024. Speaking at an event at the office of the Comptroller & Auditor General of India here to release a 'Compendium of Asset Accounts on Mineral and Energy Resources', the minister said commercial coal mine auction which was institutionalised by the present government has made the auctioning process totally transparent. Joshi also complemented CAG's office for bringing out the first ever compendium of asset account on mineral assets of the country. The minister said that the report presents comprehensive picture of the mineral resources spread across different states in the country. He said that the compendium will help in further strengthening sustainable mining process which is of great importance for ecology and future generation. Vedanta Ltd bags two coal commercial mines in e-auction in Odisha

Vedanta Ltd has emerged as the highest bidder for two coal mines in Odisha on the second day of commercial coal mines auction. The government put on sale 10 coal mines under the commercial coal mine auction on Tuesday and Wednesday. "On the 2nd day of the e-auction today , two coal mines were put up for auction of which both coal mines were MMDR coal mines," the coal ministry said in a statement. The blocks were auctioned under the second attempt of the fourth round of commercial coal mine auction. Both the coal mines are fully explored and have Peak Rate Capacity (PRC) of 20 million tonnes per annum. Coal ministry slashes interest on late payment of royalty and rent

The government has reduced the rate of interest levied on delayed payment of royalty, rent and fee from coal mines, a move that would give a fillip to ease of doing business. The coal ministry has amended the Mineral Concession Rules, 1960 (MCR) aimed at decriminalising its provisions. The Centre has been taking action in a bid to reduce compliances for business and citizens, the coal ministry said in a statement. "To further promote and boost the 'Ease of doing business' policy of the government, the amendment in MCR decriminalised 68 provisions whereas penalty has been reduced for 10 provisions of MCR," it said. MCR relates to the application and grant of mineral concessions such as reconnaissance permit, prospecting license, and mining lease. These concessions are pre-condition for development and operationalisation of mines, necessitating many compliances.
