PM Modi arrives in Tripura to join swearing-in ceremony of Manik Saha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday arrived in Tripura to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Manik Saha-led council of ministers. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda have already come to the northeastern state to join the programme. Saha will take oath as the chief minister of Tripura for the second time. The BJP won 32 seats in the 60-member House in the recent assembly elections in Tripura, while its ally IPFT managed to secure one seat. This is for the first time that any anti-Left government has retained power in Tripura in the past three decades. We hope the BJP 2.0 government will meet the aspirations of the people, a BJP leader said. In 1988, the Congress-TUJS defeated the Left in the border state and formed the government, but it lost to the Communists in 1993. The opposition CPI(M) and the Congress have decided to boycott the swearing-in ceremony of the second BJP-IPFT government, protesting post-poll violence in the state, Rakhal Majumder,

BJP leaders using Pulwama widows to gain political mileage: Rajasthan CM

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday targeted the BJP, saying some of its leaders were disrespecting the widows of martyrs and using them to gain political mileage. This comes a day after relatives of three CRPF personnel killed in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack reached Congress leader Sachin Pilot's residence and demanded a meeting with the party high command, accusing the state government of not fulfilling promises made to them. Without directly naming BJP Rajya Sabha MP Kirodi Lal Meena, who has been sitting on a 'dharna' with the widows of the martyrs, Gehlot said in a statement, "Some BJP leaders are disrespecting the wives of the martyrs by using them to gain political mileage. This has never been the tradition of Rajasthan. I condemn it." The widows' demands include installing statues of the slain jawans, giving jobs to their relatives on compassionate grounds and construction of roads in their villages. In his statement, Gehlot said the widow of Hemraj Meena, wh

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday attacked the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, alleging that the deceased in the "Allahabad murder case" was a member of the ruling party and the one whose name has cropped up is its minister. "When will those BJP workers, who are destroying the image of party, be reduced to dust or removed from ministerial posts," Yadav asked in a tweet in Hindi. "The deceased in the Allahabad murder case was a member of the BJP and the one whose name is coming up in the context of money is also a BJP minister. After all, what secret is the government hiding by doing the encounter," he asked. The man who fired the first shot at Umesh Pal, a key witness in the killing of former BSP legislator Raju Pal in 2005, was gunned down in an encounter with Prayagraj police on Monday. BJP says Rahul Gandhi insulted India abroad; twisting statement: Congress

Hitting back at the BJP over its criticism of Rahul Gandhi's remarks in the UK, the Congress on Tuesday said the ruling party is "rattled" whenever he speaks and was resorting to distorting, twisting and lying on his comments. The Congress' attack came after Ravi Shankar Prasad, a former Union minister, lashed out at Gandhi for his criticism of the state of democracy in India and the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh). At a press conference, the BJP leader also accused Gandhi of seeking the intervention of Europe and the US in India, and said he has gone against the consensus in India against any interference in its internal affairs by foreign powers. "Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad is doing what he and his Supremo do best-- distort, twist, defame and lie with a straight face," Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a tweet. Tagging a media report on Prasad's remarks, Congress' media department head Pawan Khera said on Twitter, "There is nothing more amusing than watching an ...

BJP likes to believe it will be in power eternally: Rahul Gandhi in London

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) likes to believe it will be in power in India eternally but that is not the case, and to say the Congress is "gone" is a ridiculous idea, Opposition MP Rahul Gandhi said in London on Monday. Addressing an in-conversation session at the Chatham House think tank on Monday evening to round off his week-long UK tour, Gandhi also pinpointed the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's lack of focus on a shifting nature of the political discourse in India as the key factor behind its failure. "To put it in perspective, if you look at the time from independence to now, the Congress party has been in power for the majority of the time," he said. "Before the BJP was in power for 10 years, we were in power for 10 years. The BJP likes to believe that they have come to power in India and they are going to be in power eternally, that is not the case," the Congress leader added. The BJP-led government came to power in India in 2014. Gandhi, th

Governors, CMs should respect Lakshmana rekha to avoid conflict: Goa guv

Amid increasing confrontation between governors and chief ministers in non-BJP ruled states, Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai has suggested that both sides should respect their Lakshmana rekha' to avoid any conflict. There is a Lakshmana rekha within which each pillar of democracy should function. Once that line is crossed, the Constitution does not have any remedy for that, Pillai said. The discussions which took place in the Constituent Assembly go on to show that its members never expected a situation in which the three pillars - legislative, executive and judiciary - of democracy would come on a confrontational course, he told PTI over phone. Pillai's comment has come at a time when the tussle between governors and chief ministers of non-BJP ruled states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Telangana, West Bengal, Punjab and Jharkhand has gone up on several issues. Pillai, without referring to any particular incident of confrontation, said, I cannot say anything about the ...

In the recently held elections, the BJP won 32 seats of the 60-member Assembly while its ally- Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) - won one seat.
