Petrol doped with 20 per cent ethanol was rolled out on Monday at select petrol pumps in 11 states and union territories as part of a programme to increase use of biofuels to cut emissions as well as dependence on foreign exchange-draining imports. At present, 10 per cent ethanol is blended in petrol (10 per cent ethanol, 90 per cent petrol) and the government is looking to double this quantity by 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the higher 20 per cent ethanol blended petrol two months ahead of the planned rollout in April, at the India Energy Week (IEW) 2023 here. "We have increased ethanol blending in petrol from 1.5 per cent (in 2014) to 10 per cent and are now progressing towards 20 per cent blending," Modi said. In the first phase, 15 cities will be covered and in the next two years it will be expanded throughout the country. India saved as much as Rs 53,894 crore in forex outgo from 10 per cent blending besides benefiting the farmers. E-20 (petrol with 20 per cen

Sugar sector's success has environmental risks
India needs to "decarbonise" its transport sector quickly as the country has the potential to be a global torch-bearer in bio-fuels, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Sunday. Speaking virtually at the Sugar and Ethanol Conference organised here by Chini Mandi, he said 80 per cent of the energy requirement of the Indian transport sector was being fulfilled through import of fossil fuels like petrol, diesel etc, which was costing the country more than Rs 16 lakh crore annually. "This is an economic and environment problem. The transport sector also accounts for 90 per cent carbon emissions. There is immediate need to decarbonise the transport sector. The Union government is pursuing bio-fuels and compressed bio gas on mission mode to replace these imports in a cost effective, pollution free way," he said. "The government is encouraging policy frameworks for production of bio fuels and creation of a sustainable ecosystem around it. The Centre is giving a huge push to ethanol as fuel
India will at the upcoming G20 meeting plans to pitch for a global alliance on biofuels on lines of the highly-successful international solar alliance, Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Tuesday. The International Solar Alliance (ISA) was conceived as a coalition of solar resource-rich countries to address their special energy needs and was launched on November 30, 2015 by India and France to implement the Paris Agreement. India, the world's third largest oil-consuming and importing nation, is now pushing for greater use of biofuels extracted from sugarcane, cereals and agri waste as a means to cut reliance on crude oil. "We will utilise our G20 presidency to try and set up an international biofuel alliance like the International Solar Alliance," Puri said KPMG's ENRich 2022 conference here. India is taking over the presidency of the group of 20 major economies, also called G20, and will host a meeting of the member nations in September next year. With nations from Brazil to
Minister outlines plan for carbon reduction
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep S Puri on Wednesday said that the number of petrol pumps selling biofuels has increased threefold from 29,897 in 2016-17 to 67,641 in 2021-22. India's ethanol demand is poised to grow to 10.16 billion litres by 2025, he noted. The minister, who also has Housing and Urban Affairs portfolio, said India is ready from the supply side to launch E20."This target was advanced by five years from 2030 under the ethanol production goal of 1,000 crore litres to April 2023."He said that there is a need to massively upscale the production of flex-fuel engine vehicles in the country, according to an official statement. In the case of E20, 20 denotes the percentage of ethanol mixed with petrol. Essentially, the number signifies the percentage of ethanol in petrol. The minister was speaking at the plenary session on 'A giant leap for biofuels - Ethanol blending & SATAT Scheme' at Siam's International Conference on Biofuels - A Pathway Towards Sustainable Future in .
