12 people hurt, 30 houses damaged as tornado hits Punjab's Fazilka

At least 12 people were injured and 30 houses damaged after a tornado hit the Bakenwala village in this Punjab district, officials said on Saturday. The tornado also damaged standing crops in the fields and kinnow orchards, they said. Bakenwala resident Gurmukh Singh said, "Villagers saw the tornado around 4 pm on Friday." It caused damage in a 2-2.5-km area, he said. Deputy Commissioner Senu Duggal, who visited the affected village, said the administration shifted those villagers whose houses were damaged to the local government school. "The administration will also begin the process to assess the loss of property and crop that will be compensated by the government," Duggal said. A video of the tornado wreaking havoc was widely circulated on social media. The injured have been admitted to the civil hospital in Fazilka.

Punjab Congress chief comes down heavily on AAP govt over Amritpal issue

Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring on Wednesday slammed the AAP government for alleged botched up police operation to nab radical preacher Amritpal Singh. In a statement, he said people's trust and confidence in the state government was at its lowest ebb ever in history. "It won't be any exaggeration that Bhagwant Mann is spearheading the most inept state government in the country which hurtles towards a new embarrassment every new day," Warring said, adding that the absence of governance in Punjab is a matter of concern for every Punjabi. He said there are tell tale signs that the state government's intelligence failed miserably in catching the Khalistan sympathiser even after such 'meticulous' planning as is being claimed by the state government. Notably, the Punjab Police on Wednesday reiterated that they are making all-out efforts to trace Amritpal against whom a lookout circular and a non-bailable warrant had been issued. "Our efforts are on to arrest him," he

Two Ex-DJB officials sent to 3 years in jail in money laundering case

A court here has sentenced two former Delhi Jal Board officials to three years of rigorous imprisonment in a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate, saying it was taking a "lenient view" in the matter. Special Judge Ashwani Kumar Sarpal was hearing the case against Raj Kumar Sharma and Ramesh Chand Chaturvedi, who were sentenced to five years and four years imprisonment, respectively by a CBI court in December 2012 for misappropriating around Rs 47.76 lakh from the DJB and against whom the ED had registered a case in December 2009. The anti-money laundering agency, however, filed the complaint in the present court in March 2021 after a delay of more than 11 years and around four years after the accused completed their sentence in the CBI case. "The accused persons, after realising that they have no defence in this present prevention of money laundering Act (PMLA) matter after conviction in scheduled offences by the CBI court which was upheld by the Supreme .

BJP trying to topple Delhi govt by offering money to MLAs, alleges AAP

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has alleged that the BJP, which has only eight MLAs in the Delhi Assembly, is trying to topple the Arvind Kejriwal government by offering money to legislators under the guise of a no-confidence motion. Addressing a press conference here, the AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is offering two options to his party MLAs -- they should either join the saffron party or the CBI-ED will put them in jail. The BJP is planning to bring a no-confidence motion against the Kejriwal government during the ongoing session of the Delhi Assembly. "The AAP has 62 MLAs with a thumping majority and the BJP has eight MLAs. But the BJP wants to topple the government by buying MLAs under the guise of a no-confidence motion, just like governments that fell from Madhya Pradesh to Maharashtra. Here are the options that the BJP is giving to our MLAs -- join the BJP or the CBI-ED will put you in jail," Chadha said. "The BJP has been losing

Kejriwal cannot escape responsibility for liquor scam under his govt: BJP

The BJP fired a fresh salvo at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday, saying he cannot escape responsibility for the "liquor scam" under his government. Delhi BJP's working president Virendra Sachdeva said Kejriwal never cared to reply to the "grave questions" raised by the saffron party over the "liquor scam" and defended former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who is currently in jail in connection with a case pertaining to alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the excise policy for the national capital. Sachdeva asked Kejriwal why the wholesale liquor business in Delhi was handed over to private players, despite a technical committee's recommendation that it should be handled by the government. Why was the commission of wholesalers raised from 5 per cent to 12 per cent against the recommendation of the committee, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader asked. "Kejriwal is the mastermind of the liquor scam and he cannot escape the probe,"

AAP launches door-to-door campaigns against arrests of Sisodia, Jain

The AAP on Monday kicked off signature and door-to-door campaigns as part of its protest against the arrest of party leaders Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain on corruption charges. The campaigns started near the Metro station at Laxmi Nagar in the presence of Gopal Rai, the AAP's Delhi convenor. The AAP has alleged that Jain and Sisodia were arrested to stop the Delhi government's good work in health and education. Through these campaigns, the AAP aims to apprise people about the "false cases" registered against Sisodia and Jain. Jain is lodged in Tihar jail in connection with a money laundering case. He was arrested last May. The CBI arrested Sisodia on February 26 in connection with alleged irregularities related to implementation of the now scrapped Excise Policy, 2021-22. The two leaders have since resigned from the Delhi Cabinet, being replaced by Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj.
