UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said Azamgarh earlier faced a "crisis of identity" and youths from the district were denied even a place to live in other cities but its glory is now being brought back under the BJP rule. To ensure cleanliness in villages, the Uttar Pradesh government will provide necessary training to local functionaries and sanitation workers, an official said on Tuesday. The official said around 83,000 people, including village pradhans, block motivators and panchayat assistants, will be provided training in batches in 20 District Panchayat Resource Centres and the Panchayati Raj Training Institute in Lucknow. In a statement, Additional Chief Secretary of Panchayati Raj Manoj Kumar said that 25,145 gram panchayats will be covered in the second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) in this financial year. "Under this, a target has been set to cover 43,242 revenue villages. The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has proposed the names of Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor and the son of Ram temple construction committee chairman Nripendra Misra, sources said on Monday. The other four names include Ambedkar Mahasabha chairman Lalji Prasad Nirmal, former BJP Braj region unit head Rajnikant Maheshwari, chief of BJP's Varanasi district unit Hansraj Vishwakarma, and Ramsurat Rajbhar, who hails from Azamgarh. The Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission has updated the voter list for the forthcoming urban local body polls, adding more than 96 lakh electors. In a statement issued here on Sunday, State Election Commissioner Manoj Kumar said 4,32,31,827 people are eligible to vote in the polls. The strength of the electorate was 3,35,95,547 during the last polls in 2017. There has been an increase of 96,36,280 voters. He said the increase in the number of voters has been primarily due to expansion of the boundary of municipal corporations and nagar palika parishads. Owing to formation of new nagar panchayats, many rural areas have also been included in urban limits. Kumar said 21,23,268 voters have been shifted from rural to urban jurisdictions. He said there will be more than 4.33 lakh first-time voters this time. These voters have turned 18 by January 1, 2023. The urban local body polls are expected to be held soon, but the notification is yet to be issued.

Uttar Pradesh Cane Development and Sugar Mills' Minister Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary on Sunday said the state government is gradually inching towards ensuring the payment of sugarcane farmers by sugar mills within a week. "At present, sugarcane farmers are getting their payment within 10 days in 105 sugar mills of the state. We are making efforts to bring this to a week (from giving sugarcane crop to sugar mills)," Chaudhary told reporters here. He said during previous governments, ensuring early payment to sugarcane farmers was considered a herculean task. However, a payment of over Rs 2.04 lakh crore to farmers for their sugarcane produce has been made within a span of six years. Against the crushing of 930 crore tonne sugarcane this season, Rs 21,620 crore have been paid to farmers till March 31, the minister said.
