The BJP-IPFT alliance won 31 seats in the 60-member Tripura assembly, securing its return to power in the northeastern state for the second time in a row. According to the Election Commission website, the BJP bagged 30 seats while the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) got one. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address BJP workers and supporters on Thursday as the party appeared set to retain power in Tripura on its own and with its senior ally Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party in Nagaland. Official sources said Modi is likely to be felicitated for the victory at a meeting of senior party leaders at its headquarters here. The BJP on Thursday said it was ready to accept all demands of Tipra Motha, except for Greater Tipraland, if the new party led by former royal Pradyot Debbarma extends its support. Adequate security arrangements have been made to ensure that the vote counting process on March 2 was peaceful, with Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan keeping a close watch on the preparations, a senior officer said. Top officials, including the chief secretary, DGP and the chief electoral officer (CEO), have visited all districts and held meetings with police chiefs, issuing instructions to them to take stock of the situation in their respective areas, he said. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tripura, Gitte Kirankumar Dinakarrao, on Monday appealed to political parties and people for ensuring peace during and after the counting of votes for the state assembly elections. Nearly 88 per cent of voting was recorded in the one-day Tripura assembly elections, which were largely peaceful, a senior EC official said on Friday. The elections to the 60-member assembly were held across the northeastern state on Thursday. An average of 87.63 per cent polling was recorded in the assembly elections, which went till 8.30 or 9 pm on Thursday. The figure excluded the number of polled postal ballots, Additional CEO Subhasish Bandhopadhyay told PTI. Of the total 28.14 lakh voters, over 24.66 lakhs have exercised their franchise, he said. A total of 69.96 per cent of 28.13 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the Tripura assembly elections till 3 pm on Thursday, with polling largely being peaceful amid sporadic incidents of violence, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Gitte Kirankumar Dinakarrao said. At least three people, including a CPI(M) leader and two polling agents of the Left party, were injured in separate incidents of violence during the polling.
