To push rail infrastructure and connectivity in tribal dominated regions, the detailed project report of a new line "Janjatiya Gaurav Corridor" -- provided in the Union Budget for FY 2023-24 -- has been taken up, the government informed Lok Sabha on Wednesday. In a written reply, Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the DPRs of the projects identified under the corridor, costing Rs 70,000 crore, including those falling fully or partly in Odisha have been taken up which includes consultations with various stakeholders including state governments, public representatives, and organisations/rail users/tribal people etc among others. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra governments should prepare a roadmap to develop Mangarh Dham, the site of a tribal uprising against the British that has now been declared a national monument. The dham, a memorial for around 1,500 tribals massacred by the British army in 1913, is located in Rajasthan's Banswara district close to the borders of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, a region with a large tribal population. The four states together under the leadership of the Centre can develop the dham more so that tribal leader Govind Guru's place, Mangarh Dham, can get a global identity, the prime minister said addressing a gathering, comprising tribals, among others, here. Around 1,900 tribal women from Jharkhand were offered jobs during an employment drive conducted by Tata Electronics Limited in collaboration with the Union Tribal Affairs Ministry to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday, a statement said. The two-day recruitment drive was organized at Khunti, Saraikela, Chaibasa and Simdega districts of Jharkhand on September 18 and 19. The women will be employed at the company's facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. More than 2,600 women participated in the recruitment drive from the rural areas of the districts, of which 1,898 have been selected, the ministry said in the statement. Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda said the drive was aimed at empowering young tribal women, and thanked Tata Electronics Ltd for providing them opportunities to work and upgrade their skills. Munda will on Tuesday flag off a special train which will carry the first batch of 822 tribal women from Ranchi to Hosur. The remaining candidates will be sent in the second .
A total of 4.81 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in 176 identified tribal districts across 25 states till July 15, the government has informed Lok Sabha. The Centre, however, said it does not maintain "centralised data on COVID-19 mortality with urban, rural, tribal breakup". Replying to a question, Minister of State for Tribal Affairs Renuka Singh Saruta said, "The COVID-19 vaccination drive does not make any discrimination on the basis of gender, socio-economic class or residence, etc." However, all efforts have been made to ensure vaccination of people in tribal areas, including options of registration at common service centres, 'walk-in registration' at Covid vaccination centre and 'near-to-home vaccination centres' for elderly people and people with disabilities, she said on Monday.
