The Centre is aiming at nearly doubling seafood exports to USD 14 billion by 2025, a Union minister said on Wednesday. Seafood exports are showing a positive trend this fiscal with three per cent growth in volume, she said. "In 2021-22, the (seafood) exports figure was worth USD 7.76 billion, which was 17 per cent of our agriculture shipments. We have a target to achieve USD 14 billion by 2025," Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Anupriya Patel said. She was speaking here at the inauguration of the India International Seafood Show 2023. Kolkata will host the India International Seafood Show 2023, which will feature a buyer-seller meet with a particular focus on G20 countries, organisers said on Tuesday. The three-day event organised by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) in association with the Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) will commence on Wednesday. The Show assumed significance as the Indian seafood sector needs to regain buoyancy in the post-pandemic phase in the face of stiff global competition and a stringent inspection regime imposed by the European Union and Japan on shrimp consignments. European Union and Japan are members of G20. According to M Karthikeyan, director of MPEDA, around 5,000 delegates from India and other countries are expected to attend the event. Eclipsing 60 other countries of the world, India has emerged as the largest exporter of shrimp, a major seafood export item, to the United States of America.US imported more than 32 per cent of shrimps it consumed in 2017 calendar year from India. Between January and December, last year, USA imported 664,119 tonnes of shrimps. "Lower anti-dumping duty and opening up of market by the US buyers has allowed Indian exporters to send more products to the USA. Many importers are now interested to trade directly with the exporters", said Tara Patnaik, Chairman, Falcon Marine Exports Ltd, the largest seafood exporter in country. Burgeoning export of home grown shrimps have boosted seafood exports to its highest ever extent in 2016-17.Official figures released by the Marine Products Exports Development Authority (MPEDA) on Wednesday showed seafood exports reaching a record high of 11,34,948 Million Tonnes as well as earning a record $ 5.78 billion mainly due to rapid growth in frozen shrimp and fish shipments.Frozen shrimp of the Vannamei variety maintained its position as the top exported item, accounting for more than 64 per cent of the total earnings.
