In a setback to the Modi government, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal announced in Lok Sabha on Thursday that Harsimrat Kaur Badal will resign from the Union Cabinet in protest against the three farm bills, tabled in Parliament by the Centre for passage. In his speech during a discussion on two of the farm bills -- the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, Sukhbir Singh Badal said the proposed laws will "destroy" the 50 years of hard work put in by successive Punjab governments and farmers to build the agriculture sector. He recalled Punjab's massive contribution in making India self-sufficient in food grain production as he vehemently opposed the bills. New Delhi, March 30The Union Cabinet today gave its nod for issuing two ordinances, including the one to authorise expenditure beyond April 1 in centrally-ruled Uttarakhand in view of the political crisis there. The Cabinet, chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Brussels, met today evening to also approve another ordinance that seeks to bring in changes in the Enemy Property Act, 1968. The Cabinet recommended re-promulgation of an earlier ordinance issued in January as Parliament could not pass a bill to replace it within the stipulated time.The President had on the recommendation of the government prorogued the Budget session of Parliament to facilitate promulgation of the two ordinances.Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the union cabinet met in light of the developments in Uttarakhand.
