Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Sandeep Deshpande was injured after being attacked with a stump by three unidentified persons while he was on a morning walk in central Mumbai's Dadar area on Friday morning, a police official said. Deshpande received minor injuries in the incident and is out of danger, he said. "Three unidentified persons attacked MNS leader Deshpande with a stump during his morning walk at Shivaji Park," the official said, adding that nobody has been arrested in this connection so far. A first information report (FIR) is being registered at the Shivaji Park police station, he said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday met MNS chief Raj Thackeray at the latter's residence in central Mumbai. While an official said that Shinde called on Thackeray on the occasion of Ganesh festival, the meeting led to speculation as it came ahead of the crucial civic polls in Mumbai. Shinde met Raj Thackeray at his new residence 'Shivtirth' in Dadar. The MNS chief, who has been at loggerheads with his cousin and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray for long, had met BJP leaders last month, leading to a buzz that the saffron party may form a tie-up with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena for the Mumbai polls. The BJP is currently in alliance with the Shinde-led faction of the Shiv Sena.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned MNS party chief Raj Thackeray in connection with its money laundering probe in the IL&FS alleged payment default case, officials said Monday. They said the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief has been asked to appear before the investigating officer of the case on August 22. They added that Unmesh Joshi, son of former state chief minister and Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi, has also been summoned in the same case. Joshi is supposed to appear on Monday or Tuesday, they said. The agency is probing Thackeray's involvement in the case in connection with the IL&FSgroup's loan equity investment in a company called Kohinoor CTNL. The company was promoted by Joshi. Thackeray and Joshi had jointly bid for some assets after creating a consortium but later the MNS supremo quit. The ED, it is understood, wants to look into the entire transaction and hence has summoned the two. The ED had last week filed a charge sheet in the case too.
