Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scored hat tricks Sunday as Erik ten Hag was humiliated in his first Manchester derby. Manchester City destroyed rival Manchester United 6-3 at the Etihad and moved to within a point of Premier League leader Arsenal. It was Haaland's third hat trick of the season and his third in successive home league games. Ten Hag becomes the sixth United manager since Alex Ferguson's retirement to lose his first derby but had a heavier defeat than either David Moyes or Ralf Rangnick, who both lost by margins of 4-1. The Dutchman came into the game having been named manager of the month in the Premier League but any celebrations were short-lived after a traumatic afternoon for United in the highest-ever scoring meeting between these teams. It was a case of damage limitation at the halftime interval after City raced to a 4-0 lead in an utterly dominant display. Pep Guardiola's team controlled 62% of possession by the midway point and was ahead after just eight mi
Newcastle, Leeds and Brighton carried their strong Premier League form into the English League Cup by beating lower-league opposition in the second round despite fielding lineups containing fringe players. The draw for the third round was also made and it features seven all-Premier League matchups including Manchester City hosting Chelsea. Newcastle was pushed the hardest of the three top-flight teams in action Wednesday, needing to come from behind to beat fourth-tier Tranmere Rovers 2-1 thanks to goals by Jamaal Lascelles in the 40th minute and Chris Wood in the 52nd. Coming off a 3-0 win over Chelsea in the league, Leeds beat third-tier Barnsley 3-1 after Colombia winger Luis Sinisterra scored his first goal for the club. Mateusz Klich scored the other two goals for Leeds, one of them a penalty. Brighton has already won away against Manchester United and West Ham in the league and found third-tier Forest Green easy to deal with. Deniz Undav, on his first start for the club sin
Barcelona and Manchester City drew 3-3 in a friendly to raise money and awareness for the fight against ALS. More than 91,000 fans were at the Camp Nou for the match, with the proceeds going to help raise funds for research against ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, an incurable neurodegenerative disorder. The honorary kickoff was taken by Juan Carlos Unzu, the former Barcelona goalkeeper and goalkeeping coach who has the disease and helped promote the friendly. We want to continue living and enjoying life, he said before the match. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay scored for the hosts. Man City got goals from Julin lvarez, Cole Palmer and Riyad Mahrez deep into stoppage time. Man City defender Luke Mbete had to be substituted late in the game after a clash of heads with Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen. Mbete had to be immobilized and carried out on a stretcher.
Manchester City issued an apology for what the club described as an assault on Aston Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen during a field invasion by City fans celebrating winning the Premier League title. The incident happened as Olsen tried to leave the field at Etihad Stadium as it became covered in thousands of City fans after the fulltime whistle of the 3-2 win over Villa. Footage on British broadcaster Sky Sports showed Olsen covering his head as supporters swarmed around him as he was being escorted off the playing surface by a steward. The Sweden goalkeeper then appeared to engage in a verbal confrontation with a fan before being clipped by the arm of another celebrating supporter. Bowing his head, Olsen was eventually helped off the field by a second official. Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard had no news of Olsen's condition in the news conference after the game on the final day of the season. City said it was opening an investigation and would issue an indefinite stadium ban to
Manchester City held Atltico Madrid to a 0-0 draw to return to the Champions League semifinals and keep alive its hopes of winning Europe's top club competition for the first time. City advanced thanks to its 1-0 win in the first leg last week. In the end, it was Pep Guardiola getting the best of Diego Simeone in the battle of styles between City's offensive-minded tactics and Atltico's more cautious approach. Atltico's attack struggled to find the net again and the Spanish club managed only three attempts on target after having none in the first leg. The hosts played the final minutes a man down after defender Felipe was sent off for kicking an opponent. The benches had been cleared a few moments earlier as Atltico's players appeared upset with City's attempt to waste time. The match ended with more than 12 minutes of stoppage time and Atltico had a couple of goods chances to break the deadlock but couldn't capitalize on them. Runner-up last year, City will next face Real Madrid
An overhaul of financial restrictions in European soccer will be discussed by leading clubs at a meeting Thursday with limits on spending rather than salary caps. UEFA is set to replace its Financial Fair Play rules, which placed limits on losses, after more than a decade. Instead, teams in competitions including the Champions League will eventually only be allowed to spend up to 70% of their income on soccer-related activities, people with knowledge of the plans told The Associated Press. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the plans that are still being formulated. The European Club Association will assess the proposals that have been worked on with UEFA at an executive board meeting on Thursday. The final rules are set to be concluded at a UEFA executive committee meeting in April. There are still issues about disparities across Europe, including domestic tax regimes and social contributions that could benefit clubs over ...
