Tamil documentary The Elephant Whisperers emerged as the winner at the 95th Academy Awards making it a maiden victory for India in the Documentary Short Subject category. Directed by Kartiki Gonsalves, the Netflix documentary bested Haulout, How Do You Measure a Year?, The Martha Mitchell Effect and Stranger at the Gate to scoop the trophy. The Elephant Whisperers" depicts an unbreakable bond between two abandoned elephants and their caretakers. It is produced by Guneet Monga and Achin Jain of Sikhya Entertainment. Earlier, two entries were set in India - "Smile Pinki" and "Period. End Of Sentence", won Oscars for Documentary Short. Monga was the executive producer on Period.
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan's spy thriller "Pathaan" has become the "highest opening weekend" grosser in the history of Hindi cinema with the earnings of Rs 542 crore in five days. According to Yash Raj Films (YRF), in the five-day extended weekend for Republic Day "Pathaan" registered Rs 60.75 crore nett in India (Hindi Rs 58.5 crore, all dubbed versions Rs 2.25 crore), taking the India gross to Rs 70 crore. The overseas gross on day five stands at Rs 42 crore, taking the total collection on its fourth day of release to Rs 112 crore gross. The Siddharth Anand-directed feature, which also stars Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, has recorded Rs 207.2 crore in the overseas territories alone. "At YRF, we are proud that 'Pathaan' is entertaining people across the globe, pulling people to the theatres and giving them an experience of a lifetime!" Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, said in a statement. "The YRF Spy Universe films have also registered blockbusters every single time.
Campus comedy-drama "Doctor G" has amassed over Rs 5 crore on the second day of its release, the makers announced on Sunday. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rakul Preet Singh, the film marks the directorial debut of Anubhuti Kashyap. In an Instagram post, production house Junglee Pictures said the film has so far raised Rs 9.09 crore nett at the box office -- Rs 3.87 crore on Friday and Rs 5.22 crore on Saturday. "We just can't stop our hearts from doing all (love) as #DoctorG crossed 9.09 Cr in just 2 days! Thank you for making our weekend this great! Keep the love coming in and don't miss #DoctorGInCinemas now!" the post read. "Doctor G" is co-written by Sumit Saxena, Vishal Wagh, Saurabh Bharat, and Kashyap. Produced by Vineet Jain and co-produced by Amrita Pandey, the film also stars Shefali Shah in a guest appearance.

Diljit Dosanjh's upcoming film "Jogi" is set during the 1984 anti-Sikh massacre, an event the actor-singer insists should be called a "genocide". Violence erupted in Delhi and other parts of the country after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. Over 3,000 Sikhs were killed across India. Most were killed in Delhi. "We should not call it riots, the right word is genocide. When there is a two-sided fight between people, then it is a riot. According to me, it should be called a genocide," Dosanjh, who was born in January the same year, told PTI in an interview. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, "Jogi" is a Hindi feature film which explores the agony of the Sikh community in the national capital following Gandhi's assassination. Dosanjh, who plays the titular role in the movie, said the film is a "collective" view of the real-life incidents that took place in 1984.
