The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) will conduct an awareness drive this week to inform the homeless about the facilities being provided by it under its winter action plan, officials said on Monday. Thirty volunteers have been working for rescue drives and 15 rescue vans have been deployed at several locations in the city. "There are two volunteers in each rescue van and so far, 15 such vans have been deployed across the city. We will also start another awareness drive so that more homeless people can avail the benefits we are providing under our winter action plan," DUSIB member Bipin Rai told PTI. The awareness drive will be started by Wednesday. As the temperature has been dropping in the national capital, around 150 tents have been set up at 33 locations so far by the DUSIB for the homeless. The new mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, has said her administration will start moving homeless people from tent encampments into hotels and motels through a new program that launches Tuesday. Bass told NBC's Meet the Press host, Chuck Todd, on Sunday that her plan to move homeless people into rooms immediately will not address everybody, but it is going to address, hopefully, a significant number. She said people will not be forced to move, but that sanitation crews will stand by to clean up areas after people have left. But this is not coercing people. With rain lashing several parts of Delhi and the temperature dipping further, homeless people are taking refuge in night shelters."Today many people are coming here because of the rain. We provide many facilities including blankets, hot water, medicines. Tonight there are 19 people at the shelter. Some are rickshaw pullers, some do job, homeless people come here to take shelter," Manoj Kumar, caretaker of the night shelter at Lodhi Road told ANI.Rishipal, caretaker of Raja Garden night shelter said that COVID protocols are followed there adding that doctors visit the place twice a week."We provide food.
