Passenger vehicle market leaders Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai on Saturday reported a decline in wholesales in December 2021, although homegrown majors Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra reported growth, amid semiconductor shortage continuing to impact production. Other manufacturers Nissan and Skoda also reported an increase in December 2021 sales although Honda Cars India witnessed a decline last month. The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) reported a 4 per cent fall in wholesales to 1,53,149 units in December 2021 as against 1,60,226 units a year ago. Its December 2021 domestic sales slipped 13 per cent to 1,30,869 units as against 1,50,288 units in December 2020. "The shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the production of vehicles during the month. The shortage primarily affected the production of vehicles sold in the domestic market," MSI said in a statement. The company said sales of mini cars, including Alto and S-Presso, fell 35 per cent
Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) on Sunday reported a 12 year-on-year rise in domestic sales at 6,055 units for July. The company had sold 5,383 units in the domestic market during July 2020, HCIL said in a statement. Exports stood at 918 units last month, it added. "We achieved our production ramp-up from last week of July and have streamlined supplies in line with market activity. Barring few locations, dealer outlets were mostly operational last month, albeit with lesser capacity," HCIL Senior Vice-President and Director (Marketing & Sales) Rajesh Goel noted. He added that the market sentiment has improved amid prevailing lower coronavirus infection rate. "We expect the upcoming festive period will help the industry to maintain this momentum." However, the company will keep a closer watch on the challenges related to the pandemic and rising cost of acquisition of cars due to price hike from this month, he added.
Tata Motors on Sunday said its total domestic sales increased by 92 per cent to 51,981 units in July as compared to the same month last year.

After a growth of more than nine per cent in FY17, car makers have had a roaring start to the new financial year. A strong double digit growth in domestic passenger vehicle (cars, vans and utility vehicle) sales by market leader Maruti Suzuki and others including Honda, Tata Motors and Toyota helped the industry post a 16 per cent growth in April. New launches done in recent months continue to drive volumes for many companies. The sports utility vehicles remain on a growth path.
