Cloud computing-based telecom network with virtualization of its various elements and rollout of optical fibre network closer to the homes will be able to help solve call drop problem in India, a senior HCL Technologies officer said here. While speaking with PTI at the Mobile World Congress, HCL Tech Chief Technology Officer Kalyan Kumar said that post-pandemic, demand for data has jumped significantly high and telecom operators are gradually moving towards cloud computing systems to manage capacity in the network. "Fiber infrastructure going pretty much as close to the home, cloudification of the telco and virtualization of the network. These are the three things that will solve the call drop problem. We cannot solve the problem by just addressing one point," he said. Telecom regulator Trai has asked telcos to report call drop and service quality data at state level, as the regulator instructed operators to immediately improve quality of service and connectivity across the country. Trai chief P D Vaghela met representatives of telecom companies, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, on Friday to review service quality, and asked operators to take necessary steps to reduce call drops. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has made it clear to operators that it will tighten service quality benchmarks, for which a consultation process will be initiated. Around 56 per cent of respondents surveyed across India, covering 339 districts, shared that they are facing severe call drop and call connection problems, online platform LocalCircles said in a report on Monday. According to the survey, 82 per cent of people have been making data or wifi calls to overcome network issues. "56 per cent citizens say they are facing severe Call Connect and Call Drop issues," the survey said. In response to the question that approximately what per cent of their mobile phone calls have had a bad connection or call drop issues in the last 3 months, 37 per cent of respondents said that 20-50 per cent of their calls experienced the issue. The question on call connection and drop received 8,364 replies. Out of the total, 91 per cent of respondents said they face the problem, while 56 per cent said that problem was severe in their case. Instances of call drop and improper telecom network coverage have gone down and the TRAI has imposed financial disincentive of Rs 3.29 crore on service providers, the government informed Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Replying to supplementary queries during Question Hour, Minister of State for Telecom Sanjay Shamrao Dhotre said there has been a lot of improvement in call drops in the last three-four years and TRAI has introduced parameters for disincentive to telecom companies and a fine of over Rs 2.5 crore has been recovered from them. As the problem of call drops continue to irk consumers, mobile operators have committed to invest over Rs 740 billion for upgrading the existing infrastructure and also expand the network capacity.As per Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan, Reliance Jio has committed to invest Rs 500 billion to install 1 lakh towers in the coming fiscal whereas Bharti Airtel, which has invested Rs 160 billion on infrastructure, will be spending an additional Rs 240 billion on the network. Industry body COAI will reiterate its request to Trai to extend the implementation of revised call drop norms by six months as telecom operators need time to make changes and in case the sectoral regulator goes ahead with October 1 deadline, the industry should not be penalized for a couple of quarters.COAI Director General Rajan Mathews said operators need to put in codes in telecom towers and it requires time, so a leeway of six months should be granted to them.He further said implementing the new norms from October 1 will let most of the operators breaching the call drop benchmarks as the infrastructure would not be tuned for the revised methodology.Mathews said the industry is hopeful of a positive response from Trai in this regard.
