Political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor on Friday claimed that BJP's victory in the recently held Kurhani bypoll was a reflection of people's anger against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his Mahagathbandhan government. Kishor, who is on a 3,500 km-long padayatra in the state, also said that he has found out during interactions with people that they were fed up with the "rampant corruption" in Bihar. Talking to reporters at Ghodasahan area in Motihari (East Champaran), Kishor said, "People are not happy with the performance of the Mahagathbandhan government. I have been interacting with people over the last several days, and I can say with full confidence that they are fed up with rampant corruption in the state. "The Kurhani bypoll result is a reflection of people's anger against Nitish Kumar." The BJP on Wednesday wrested from Bihar's ruling JD(U) the Kurhani assembly seat. The outcome of the keenly-watched "winner takes it all" Munugode bypoll in Telangana has seen the emergence of BJP as the runner up, relegating Congress to the third spot, but it may still not be an easy task for the saffron party to come to power in the state in next year's Assembly polls. In the bitterly-fought contest in last week, the ruling TRS on Sunday managed to scrape through with a 'meagre' margin of over 10,000 votes,. The BJP stood second, while the Congress lost the security deposit. BJP takes credit for having improved its votes in Munugode from a negligible number in 2018 to over 86,000 in the present byelection. For the first time, BJP got more than 30 per cent votes in South Telangana, political analyst and columnist Ramu Suravajjula said. Can BJP replicate its success in Munugode elsewhere in Telangana? Noted political analyst Telakapalli Ravi feels that the BJP still has a long way to go and feels bypoll result has reduced BJP's "hype" that it has "arrived."
The BJP was ahead in Gola Gokarannath in Uttar Pradesh and in Haryana's Adampur and Odisha's Dhamnagar after the initial round of counting of votes, while the ruling TRS was ahead of its rivals after the first round of counting in Telangana's Munugode as counting of votes got underway on Sunday in the bypolls to seven assembly constituencies in six states. However, the BJP was trailing in Bihar where the RJD has established a lead in the two assembly seats of Mokama and Gopalganj after the first round of counting. In the Munugode bypoll, the TRS has secured 6,096 votes while its nearest rival BJP got 4,904 votes in the first round. The Congress garnered 1,877 votes, official sources said. BJP candidate Aman Giri took a lead in the initial round of counting of votes on Sunday in the Gola Gokarannath assembly bypolls in Uttar Pradesh. While Giri has got 8,943 votes so far, Samajwadi Party's Vinay Tiwari got 5,008 votes, officials said. The bypoll was necessitated due to the death of
Counting of votes for bypolls to Mokama and Gopalganj assembly constituencies in Bihar began at 8 am on Sunday amid tight security arrangements. A senior election official said that trends will emerge around midday. Of the 6.10 lakh voters -- Gopalganj (3.31 lakh) and Mokama (2.70 lakh) 52.3 per cent had exercised their franchise in the two seats on November 3, he said. A total of 619 polling booths were set up in the two constituencies. Fifteen candidates are in the fray -- nine in Gopalganj and six in Mokama. This is the first electoral face-off between the ruling Grand Alliance (GA) and the opposition BJP in Bihar after the change of government in August this year, when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's party JD-U snapped ties with the saffron camp and aligned with Lalu Prasad's RJD-led coalition, comprising Congress and other parties, to form a new government. The Mokama seat fell vacant following the disqualification of RJD MLA Anant Singh after his conviction in an Arms Act ca
Counting of votes is underway on Sunday in the by-election to seven assembly constituencies in six states including former chief minister Bhajan Lal's family bastion Admapur in Haryana. Bhajan Lal's grandson Bhavya Bishnoi, who contested on a BJP ticket, and RJD's Neelam Devi, whose husband Anant Singh's disqualification necessitated the by-election in Bihar's Mokama, are among the prominent candidates in the fray. The other constituencies where results of the November 3 bypolls will be out were Gopalganj in Bihar, Andheri (East) of Maharashtra, Munugode of Telangana, Gola Gokarannath of Uttar Pradesh, and Dhamnagar of Odisha. Among the seven seats which witnessed a stiff contest between the BJP and the regional parties, the saffron party held three and the Congress two, while the Shiv Sena and the RJD had one each. For the bypolls in Bihar, the main contest is between the BJP and the RJD, and the saffron party's main contenders in Haryana are the Congress, INLD and the AAP. Main
