A majority of people view fantasy sports as online gaming that involves wagering, betting and gambling, a survey by online platform LocalCircles said on Monday. The survey on online gaming conducted by LocalCircles found that 91 per cent of the respondents want a ban on pesky SMSes that promote online and fantasy games. "While the Supreme Court has upheld its position and the position of the Punjab High Court in 2017 and ruled that fantasy sports are a game of skill, the public view continues to differ," the report said. In response to a question on "should online fantasy sports be considered as online gaming that involves wagering, betting and gambling", nearly 2 out of 3 respondents chose "yes", 14 per cent stated 'no' and the remaining 21 per cent gave no clear response. "In effect, for 65 per cent, out of 9,507 respondents, online fantasy sports is akin to gambling, wagering or a game of chance with risks in contrast to the position of the Supreme Court," the report ...
The Centre on Monday issued advisories to news websites, OTT platforms and private satellite channels asking them to refrain from carrying advertisements of offshore betting sites. ...the private satellite television channels are strongly advised to refrain advertisements of online offshore betting platforms and/or their surrogate news websites or any such product/service depicting these platforms in a surrogate manner, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting advisory said. It also warned private satellite television channels of penal action under applicable laws for violation of the advisory. In a separate advisory to publishers of news and current affairs content on digital media and OTT platforms, the ministry issued a similar directive and asked them not to target such advertisements towards the Indian audience.
FIFA on Monday officially rejected Atletico Madrid's appeal against England defender Kieran Trippier's 10-week betting ban."The FIFA Appeal Committee has dismissed the appeal lodged by the club Atletico Madrid in a case concerning the player Kieran Trippier. As a consequence, the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee passed on December 23, 2020, is confirmed, extending sanctions imposed on the player by the English FA to have worldwide effect," the football's governing body said in a statement.Earlier in the month, Trippier's ban was put on hold by FIFA following an appeal from Atletico Madrid.The defender's offences took place in July 2019, while he was still on the books of Tottenham Hotspur, but Atletico attempted to get the decision overturned by taking an appeal to FIFA.On December 23, Atletico defender was suspended for ten weeks by the FA for breaching anti-betting rules.
