Administrative work at the Aligarh Muslim University remained hamstrung on Saturday as nearly 1,600 non-teaching employees carried on their protest on Saturday over the non-payment of their wages. The protest, which was reported to be peaceful, entered its second day on Saturday. The protesters, most of them temporary workers employed on a daily wage basis, gathered near the Vice Chancellor's office on Saturday to convey their pain. According to authorities, security arrangements at all the entry points of the campus have been beefed up as a precautionary measure. Rihan Ahmad, the secretary of the Technical Staff Association of the University, told reporters that about 1,600 non-teaching temporary staff have not received their last month's salary. At least 50 students of a government primary school in a village here were taken ill after being administered the DPT vaccine. They were rushed to the nearby government primary health centre where they were treated till late evening and later discharged. The incident occurred on Friday at village Nai ka Nagla under Dadon Police station. On Saturday, Chief Medical Officer (CMO)of the district Neeraj Tyagi, however, told reporters that the affected children were only suffering from "routine reactions" from such vaccination. A delegation of BJP leaders on Friday met District Magistrate Inder Veer Singh, demanding the immediate arrest of the owner of a meat processing plant, where over 50 workers fell ill following the leakage of ammonia gas. The incident had taken place on Thursday morning at the meat plant run by Haji Zaheer Qureshi. The general secretary of the BJP's city unit, Sanju Bajaj, said his party demanded that the plant be sealed and a high-powered inquiry be ordered into its functioning. They told mediapersons that if Qureshi is not arrested within 24 hours, their party will intensify its stir. Earlier, police had booked seven members of the factory staff, including the owner, for negligence. Barring the owner, who is absconding, the other six officials were arrested. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Tuesday said the Aligarh Smart City project should be fast-tracked as the city has to play an important role in realisation of the dream of 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat'.
