CWG 2022 Day 3 Highlights: Achinta Sheuli, Jeremy Lalrinnunga strike gold
Achinta Sheuli lifted 143 kg in Snatch and 170 in clean and jerk to win third gold for India in Weightlifting. Earlier, Jeremy Lalrinnunga lifted a total of 300 kg to win gold in Men's 69 Kg category
The third day of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games was the best for the Indian contingent so far as it won two gold medals and both of them came in Weightlifting. First, 19-year-old Jeremey Lalrinnunga won the gold in the Men’s 69 Kg category with a total lift of 300 kg while later in the day, India end its campaign with gold too which was won by 20-year-old Achinta Sheuli in the Men’s 73 kg category. He lifted a total weight of 313 kg and led right throughout the competition.
Indian women’s cricket team beat Pakistan with a comfortable margin of 8 wickets as they chased down the target of 100 runs in only the 12th over (in an 18-over match) with 38 balls remaining. Smriti Mandhana hit a brilliant fifty and remained unbeaten on 63 of 42 balls. Sneh Rana picked two crucial wickets for India that helped it reduce Pakistan to only 99.
The Indian Men’s Hockey team opened its account in a manner that was expected from it. The team beat Ghana 11-0 to announce their arrival at the games.
It was a mixed day for the Indian boxers as Nikhat Zareen did win her bout very easily to advance into the quarter-finals, Shiva Thapa and Sumit Kundu lost to their Scottish and Australian opponents in the Round of 16 respectively. Heavyweight boxer Sagar did manage to win his bout against Cameronian pugilist and became the third Indian after Nikhat and Lovlina to march into the quarter-finals.
In racket sports, it was easy sailing for India as the Mixed Team in Badminton marched to the Semi-Final with an easy 3-0 win over South Africa in the quarter-final tie. India will now face Singapore in the semi-final. The Indian ace Squash players Joshna Chinappa and Saurav Ghosal too won their respective Round of 16 games and marched into the quarter-finals of Women's and Men's Singles respectively.
There were two other teams that made it to the semi-finals. While for one it was a given, the other surprised one and all. Indian Men's Table Tennis team beat Bangladesh 3-0 to move to the Semi-Finals where they will face Nigeria, the Women's Fours team in Lawn Bowls surprised Norfolk Islands and marched into the Semi-Final where they will play New Zealand.
Indian Swimmer Srihari Nataraj's golden run in the pool continued as he waved his way through the heats and semi-final to make it to the Men's 50 M Backstroke Final, which will take place tomorrow.
