Covid: 1,375 new cases in Delhi in last 24 hrs; positivity rate at 7.01%

This is the second consecutive day that Delhi has recorded over 1,100 cases in a day.

Delhi recorded 1,375 new Covid cases on Wednesday, the highest since May 8, while the positivity rate rose to 7.01 per cent, according to data shared by the health department here.

No fatalities were reported due to the infection. New cases registered on Wednesday were 22.98 per cent higher than the number of new infections recorded on Tuesday.

This is the second consecutive day that Delhi has recorded over 1,100 cases in a day.

With the fresh cases, Delhi's tally of COVID-19 cases has increased to 19,15,905 and the death toll stands at 26,223, the department said in its latest bulletin.

Delhi had reported 1,422 fresh COVID-19 cases and zero fatality on May 8, while the positivity rate was recorded at 5.34 per cent.

Despite the rise in the positivity rate, the Delhi government is not implementing graded response action plan (GRAP) devised by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority, since the hospital admissions are low.

The GRAP came into force in August last year, stipulating measures to be taken by the government as per positivity rate and bed occupancy for locking and unlocking of various activities.

Out of 9,582 hospital beds, 169 are occupied, up from 149 the previous day, while none of the 954 beds at Covid Care Centres and Covid Health Centres are occupied.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Delhi increased to 3,643 from 3,177 on Tuesday, the bulletin said.
As many as 2,108 patients are under home isolation, up from 1,910 the previous day, it said, adding that there are 199 containment zones in the city, down from 190 on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Delhi had logged 1,118 cases and two deaths while the positivity rate was at 6.50 per cent. Delhi on Monday reported 614 new COVID-19 cases and zero death due to the disease, while the positivity rate stood at 7.06 per cent.

The city had on Sunday reported 735 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths due to the disease, while the positivity rate was at 4.35 per cent. It had on Saturday reported 795 COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 4.11 per cent and zero death.

The number of daily COVID-19 cases in Delhi had touched the record high of 28,867 on January 13 this year during the third wave of the pandemic.

The city had recorded a positivity rate of 30.6 per cent on January 14, the highest during the third wave of the pandemic.

Experts have said people lowering their guard and travelling during the vacation season are the main reasons behind the latest uptick in coronavirus cases in Delhi.
In view of the current surge in cases, districts in Delhi have also ramped up measures to ensure that positive cases are detected in time.

An official on Tuesday said there is a laxity on the part of people in following Covid-appropriate behaviour despite the spike in cases. However, the official said hospitalisation rate is low and only those who have comorbidities or are unvaccinated are getting hospitalized.

On Monday, Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena held a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia to review the Covid situation in the national capital.
Saxena directed officials to ensure genome sequencing of COVID-19 samples in Delhi to "proactively" detect the prevalence of any new variant amid an uptick in coronavirus cases in the city.

Saxena underlined the need for enhanced testing coupled with a focus on the strategy of testing, tracking, treating and vaccinating to successfully fight the Covid pandemic.
