Who is Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit?

The Ministry of Education on February 7, 2022, appointed Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit as Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) first female Vice-Chancellor (VC) and her tenure will be of five years. She is a political science professor at the Department of Politics and Public Administration at Savitribai Phule University in Maharashtra.
 
Pandit is the second female Vice-Chancellor of a central university in Delhi selected by the Education Ministry after Professor Najma Akhtar of Jamia Millia Islamia.
She is also an alumna of JNU where she pursued her MPhil as well as PhD in International Relations. Her thesis was on ' Parliament and Foreign Policy in India -- The Nehru years'.
 
Life and education and career
 
Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, who was born on July 15, 1962, in Russia's St Petersburg, is fluent in English, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Kannada, Malayalam and Konkani. Her father was an author and journalist and her mother was a Professor of Tamil and Telugu at the Leningrad Oriental Faculty Department, Soviet Union.
 
She did her schooling in Chennai and topped the state. She also did her BA in History and Social Psychology in 1983 from Presidency College in Chennai and did a diploma in Social Work from California State University. Pandit is also a gold medalist. In her career, she has guided 29 PhDs.
 
She began her teaching career at Goa University in 1988 and moved to Pune University in 1993. She has held administrative positions in various academic bodies. Pandit has also been a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and the Visitor's nominee to central universities.
