Who is Sanjeev Sanyal?
Sanjeev Sanyal is an Indian economist and writer, who is currently serving as the Principal Economic Advisor to the Indian government. He is also an environmentalist and urban theorist.
Life and Education
Sanyal was born in Kolkata on August 27, 1970. Sanyal, whose great grandfather Nalinaksha Sanyal was the Chief Whip of Congress in the provincial assembly of undivided Bengal, did his graduation from Shri Ram College of Commerce and St John's College at Oxford University. He was a Rhodes scholar at the latter.
He is married to Smita Barooah and the couple lives in Delhi.
Career
Sanyal started his career by working in financial markets in the mid-nineties. For two decades, till 2015, he was the Global Strategist and Managing Director at Deutsche Bank.
He was awarded Eisenhower Fellowship in 2007 for his work on urban dynamics. In 2010, Sanyal was named Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. He received the inaugural International Indian Achievers Award in 2014 for contributions to Literature.
He was appointed the Principal Economic Advisor to the government of India led by PM Narendra Modi in 2017.
Sanyal has also written several books, some of his best-selling works include Land of the Seven Rivers, The Indian Renaissance, and The Ocean of Churn.
